GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:
Perform skilled service, maintenance, and repair work on a variety of City vehicles and equipment requiring a high degree of knowledge and understanding of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic theory, and the advanced skill to use a wide variety of testing procedures and equipment to identify problems which are difficult to locate and repair. Complete major repair, overhauls and modifications on complex systems with little or no technical advice. Essential Job Functions:
  1. Perform advanced level inspections, diagnosis and repairs of a wide range of mechanical, electrical and hydraulic defects in gasoline, electric and diesel-powered equipment, such as automobiles, heavy trucks, construction equipment, fire apparatus, and police vehicles. Diagnose difficult performance problems and improvise replacement, assembly, repair and troubleshooting techniques when necessary.
  2. Troubleshoot, repair and perform major overhauls of a wide variety of engines, components and systems, especially those that are clearly more complex, involve more complicated and varied system, or entail unusually difficult problems. 
  3. Use a variety of computerized testing equipment to pinpoint and analyze malfunctions in electrical systems and other essential systems.
  4. Install, repair, adjust, clean or replace defective or worn parts, components, and accessories in accordance with specifications or work orders.
  5. Repair pumps, lights, generators, hydraulic systems and other related-mechanical and electrical assemblies.
  6. Perform scheduled preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
  7. Align wheels, adjust brakes and perform other mechanical or electrical adjustments.
  8. May weld and cut parts, using welding and flame cutting equipment and provide welding and fabrication service for other city departments.
  9. Operate equipment or test drive vehicles to ensure compliance with safety standards and effectiveness of repairs.
  10. Prepare work orders recording parts used and labor time, and order parts as needed.
  11. Provide lead direction, training and work review to less experienced staff and assist them with more complex repairs.
  12. Organize and perform general cleaning of work area.
  13. Continually adapt to changing technology and repair techniques as systems and components become more sophisticated pursuing additional technical training as needed.
  14. Must be punctual and timely in meeting all job performance requirements, including but not limited to, attendance and tardiness standards and work deadlines.



Other Job Functions:
  1. Maintain and repair fuel dispensers at various city locations. 
  2. May respond to calls during emergencies.
       3. Perform other duties as assigned.  Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of common vehicle shop safety regulations and practices.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and standard practices of the automotive mechanic’s trade.
  • Thorough knowledge of advanced principles of electronics and ability to test and replace electronic components.
  • Knowledge of and ability to operate various construction equipment to test their functioning capabilities.
  • Skill in diagnosing and troubleshooting malfunctions when standard procedures and existing methods do not suffice.
  • Advanced skill in the use of diagnostic equipment, including computer-controlled test equipment.
  • Skill in troubleshooting all major equipment malfunctions, especially those that are difficult to locate and repair.
  • Skill in the care and use of tools and machinery employed in all phases of heavy equipment and automotive mechanical maintenance and repair work including computerized testing equipment, power tools, and common hand tools.
  • Ability to independently determine work methods, sequences, tools and equipment to use in making extensive and complex repairs.
  • Ability to perform some welding.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with a variety of people.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and comprehend technical manuals and service procedures.
  • Ability to distinguish wire colors and differentiate sounds when making repairs.
  • Physical ability to perform essential job functions.
Education and Experience: Five (5) years experience as a City Fleet Service Tech (I or II) , OR 10 years well-rounded motor vehicle experience.

Working ConditionsUsually works indoors in well-lighted, heated and ventilated shop. Occasionally make repairs to vehicles at work site resulting in exposure to extreme temperatures and weather conditions. Regularly exposed to dust, unpleasant smells, and excessive noise. Subject to hazards of operating equipment/machinery and irritation from oils, solvents, chemicals, and fumes. Regularly requires standing or lying in awkward positions for extended periods. Subject to heavy lifting of objects a distance of as much as four feet. Subject to climbing and stooping. 

Special RequirementsMust provide own basic hand tools. Must possess a valid driver’s license. Must possess ASE Certified Master Automobile or Heavy Truck Technician, OR must possess at least eight ASE/ EVT certifications in any combination or be able to obtain them within the probationary period.

Salary : $68,439 - $80,517
