About Us:
The City of Glendale Parks and Recreation Department is split into two distinct areas:
  • The Parks Division manages and maintains all public parks, open spaces, trails, storm water retention basins, landscaping at municipal facilities and Thunderbird Conservation Park. The Division is also responsible for monitoring and ensuring the safety and security of park and facility use.
  • The Recreation Division offers opportunities to enhance the social, physical, mental and economic health of our community through a variety of diverse recreation programs and facilities. Recreation programs and events are held at the Foothills Recreation and Aquatics Center, the Glendale Adult Center, Historic Sahuaro Ranch, the five community centers and at basketball, tennis, skate courts and other recreation facilities throughout the city.
The Role:

Plans, organizes, conducts, and directs a variety of professional recreational activities at a recreation facility or park site.

Additional Information:
Position Overview:
This part-time position requires availability to work any day of the week, including weekends, evenings, and holidays.
  • Typical Work Schedule:  Tuesday through Saturday, ranging from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  •  Hours: 40 hours per week
  •  Hourly rate: $31.8578
  •  FLSA status: Non-exempt (eligible for overtime pay for hours worked over 40 per week)
  •  Sick Time:  Accrues at .034 hours per-hour-paid
Retirement:
This position participates in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS).
  • The current contribution rate is 12.27%.
  • Contributions are mandatory, and are collected each pay period.

  1. This assignment is responsible for coordinating, scheduling, and supervising year-round aquatic programs and events (example:  learn-to-swim classes, waterpark operations, etc.).  Additional responsibilities also include:  developing and distributing marketing materials for the aquatics areas; developing and administrating staff training; scheduling facility rentals; working in partnership with Glendale Public Schools and other valley communities; tracking and ensuring accuracy of entered time and labor; and organizing summer seasonal hiring process.
  2. Plans, organizes, schedules, conducts, and directs recreation activities in a specialty program area such as aquatics, sports, arts and crafts programs, senior citizen recreation programs, special events, therapeutic recreation programs, and performing arts.
  3. Highly proficient with technology skills and ability to adapt and learn to many different website and software systems as well as ability to utilize each system effectively and in a timely manner.
  4. Prepares and distributes informational media including but not limited to flyers, posters, digital, and other advertisements for area programs.
  5. Performs on-site, over-the-phone, and technical support for participant registration for aquatic activities.
  6. Trains, tracks certifications, and supervises work of temporary staff. 
  7. Leads and teaches a variety of on-site aquatics activities, programs, and trainings.
  8. Enforces and explains policies and procedures to patrons in all areas of the aquatic facilities.
  9. Participates in fund raising, volunteer recruitment, and community activities.
  10. Maintains records and prepares reports for all aquatics data including certifications, class history, rational for decision making, and informational materials relating to program assignment and financial and activity records.
  11. Assures facilities and equipment are in good order and arranged to meet the requirements of scheduled users.
  12. May monitor program budget.
  13. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Bachelor’s degree in recreation, leisure services, education, health, fitness, risk management, public administration, or any other related field.

Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. Three years of relevant experience may be substituted for each year of required education.  

Knowledge of:

  • Aquatics operations and lifeguarding
  • The methods and techniques of program planning and objectives of public recreation
  • First aid methods and necessary safety precautions used in recreation work
  • The rules, regulations, and tournament bracketing governing various competitive athletic games such as swim and dive teams, water polo, synchronized swimming, and other aquatic activities and games.
  • A variety of active and passive games and activities suitable for children, adolescents, adults, senior citizens, and/or special populations
  • The tools and techniques of teaching aquatic fitness, activities, sports, or other recreational/leisure time activities
  • Basic supervisory principles and practices
  • City policies and procedures, community demographics and recreational issues

Skill in:

  • Aquatics operations, swim lessons, and lifeguarding
  • Implementing and supervising recreational activity assignments, and stimulation of interest in recreational programs and activities
  • The use and care of parks and recreation equipment, materials, and facilities

Ability to:

  • Monitor the work of temporary staff
  • Operate a personal computer
  • Prepare reports and maintains records
  • Effectively communicate verbally and in writing
  • Prepare and distribute information through marketing materials in all types of media
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with city staff and the public

Special Requirements

  • The applicants must have a past or present certification through American Red Cross Lifeguard, First Aid, CPR & AED for the Professional Rescuer R. 24 that does not expire before September 2025. In addition, the applicants must have a past or present certification through American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor.
  • If applicant possesses a current StarGuard certificate and can properly perform skills, they will be considered for hire. If hired, the applicant will be "crossed-over" to the American Red Cross certificates listed above.
  • If applicant can prove previous certifications but are not currently certified, they must get certified within 45 days of hire. 
  • A valid Lifeguard Instructor Certificate through the Red Cross or equivalent through StarGuard is preferred.
  • American Red Cross Certifications are preferred.
  • Fluency to read, write, and speak English is required. Ability to read, write, and speak Spanish is preferred.
  • Highly proficient with technology skills and ability to adapt and learn to many different website and software systems as well as ability to utilize each system effectively and efficiently.
  • Maintain American Red Cross swimming skills.

Essential physical abilities:

  • Sufficient clarity of hearing with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern emergency situations.
  • Sufficient visual clarity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern emergency situations, discern colors and comprehend written work instructions as well as rules and regulations.
  • Sufficient strength to lift objects over 50 pounds.
  • Sufficient body flexibility and balance to perform rescue and first aid operations and occupy a lifeguard station accessible by ladder or perform walking duties.
  • This position is subject to extreme heat for periods of more than one hour and, subject to noise, sun exposure and extreme weather conditions.

A post-offer physical assessment is required. The City of Glendale will incur the cost of all required testing.
