DEFINITION

To paint street light poles and traffic signals. To clean traffic signal video camera lenses. To assist in the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical equipment for the City; and to perform a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility. 


ESSENTIAL AND MARGINAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES --Essential responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:


Essential Functions:


  1. Independently paint streetlight and traffic signal poles using a bucket truck and/or ladder. 
  2. Independently clean traffic signal video camera lenses using a bucket truck. 
  3. Assist Electrical Division staff in utility locates.
  4. Assist Electrical Division staff in the installation and maintenance of street lights and traffic signals. 

5.Maintain a variety of records and files on operations and activities; maintain equipment and material inventory.


Marginal Functions:


1.Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

QUALIFICATIONS (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

Knowledge:Basic practices and procedures used in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical and electronic systems; Operational characteristics of tools and equipment used in the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical and electronic systems; Occupational hazards and standard safety precautions. Technical and operating methods, tools and equipment used in testing, repairing, constructing, and maintaining electrical and electronic equipment.

Skills:Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities; Maintain mental capacity, which allows for effective interaction and communication with others; Maintain effective audio/visual discrimination and perception to the degree necessary for the successful performance of assigned duties.

AbilitiesPerform semi-skilled activities supporting the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical and electronic systems; Read and understand technical drawings, plans and diagrams; Operate various tools, instruments and equipment used in the repair of electrical equipment; Participate in safe work practices; Maintain a variety of records and prepare clear and concise reports; Learn to analyze problems and develop effective solutions; Understand and follow oral and written instructions. 

Supervisory Controls:

The supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures. and the nature and propriety of the final results.

Guidelines:

Guidelines include the National Electric Code, OSHA regulations, the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, and City and department policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.


Complexity/Scope of Work:

The work consists of varied technical duties. The complexity of the city electrical system combined with inclement weather and field conditions contribute to the complexity of the position.


The purpose of this position is to assist other electrical division staff in skilled and semi-skilled work in the installation, repair, and maintenance of city electrical systems and equipment. Success in this position contributes to efficiency and effectiveness of a variety of city operations.

Contacts are typically with co-workers, City staff, utility company employees, contractors, vendors, and members of the general public.


Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, to resolve problems, or to provide services.


Physical Demands/Work Environment:

Field environment; exposure to and working with high voltage, electrical energy, high volumes of 

traffic, noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, gases, inclement weather conditions; work or inspect in 

confined spaces, underground, scaffolding, high places, around heavy construction equipment, on slippery or uneven surfaces, exposure to moving mechanical objects and parts, vibrations, high heat, chemicals, human waste or other bodily fluids, odors, mist, gases, or poor ventilation; Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for lifting, balancing, bending, stooping, kneeling, crawling, pushing/pulling, walking, sitting, or standing for prolonged periods of time. Working with hands about shoulders for a prolonged period.

None.

Experience, Training, and Credentials 


A combination of experience, training, and Credentials that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:



Experience:

Any experience in construction, electrical work, and/or using a bucket truck is preferred. 


Training:

Any safety training, construction training, electrical training, and/or bucket truck usage is preferred. 


Credentials

Possession of a valid driver's license.

Must be at least 18 years of age.
