Job Summary

The purpose of this position is to serve and protect the citizens and other employees of the City. This is accomplished by translating for the judge; completing distribution runs; providing court security; performing warrant service and prisoner transfers. Other duties include completing telephone calls; administering civil processes and juvenile directive to apprehend; and interacting with other City employees and citizens.

Essential Job Functions

  • Translates for judge at arraignments by translating Miranda warnings, charges, and bond amounts from English / Spanish; and providing security for the judge.
  • Completes distribution run by traveling to the local post office and police station to pick up all mail and issued traffic citations that need to be delivered to the municipal court.
  • Provides court security by acting as Bailiff for the courtroom during trials; opening court and pretrial hearings; and providing security in lobby and around the perimeter of the courthouse.
  • Performs warrant service and prisoner transfers by executing class C misdemeanor warrants; arresting people with outstanding warrants at their residence or other locations; and transporting arrested prisoners in other cities to the Grand Prairie jail.
  • Completes telephone calls by contacting defendants by telephone regarding increases in fines and / or cases going into warrant status; informing defendants of court appearances; and providing information and assistance to the public.
  • Administers civil processes and juvenile directive to apprehend by serving subpoenas and court summons as ordered by the Municipal Court Judge for adult and juvenile cases; locating and detaining juveniles; and bringing juveniles back for an appearance before the Municipal Court Judge.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature which may be obtained with six months / one year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency. Junior college, vocational, business, technical or correspondence schools are likely sources. Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training.
  • Four years of experience as a Patrol Officer; or a current police reserve officer with a law enforcement agency with at least four years of continuous reserve duty as a patrol officer.
  • Valid Texas Class C Driver's License
  • Texas Certified Peace Officer License required; Intermediate Peace Officer Certification issued by TCLEOSE
  • Bilingual (Spanish) preferred
  • Ability to read literature, books, reviews, scientific or technical journals, abstracts, financial reports, and / or legal documents. Ordinarily, such education is obtained at the college level or above. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.
  • Ability to perform the four basic arithmetic operations. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in elementary school up to high school. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.
  • Ability to write reports, prepare business letters, expositions, and summaries with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, using all parts of speech. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in high school up to college. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.
  • Receives general direction : The employee normally performs the job by following established standard operating procedures and / or policies. The employee may choose the appropriate procedure or policy. Performance is reviewed periodically.
  • Work requires analysis and judgment in accomplishing diversified duties. Requires the exercise of independent thinking within the limits of policies, standards, and precedents.
  • Persuasion Very Frequent : More than 51% of work time.
  • For city employees who are regular part time (10-19 hours per week) or seasonal hired placed on City payroll, the following benefits are provided :

  • Public Agency Retirement System : the employee contributes 6.2% each paycheck to this retirement system and the city provides 1.3%. The employee does not pay into Social Security. All of the employees contributions may be withdrawn upon separating service from the city. The City's contributions will not be paid unless the employee retires under the system.
  • Part time or seasonal employees are not eligible for any paid leave or other benefits.
  • Part time or seasonal employees are limited to working only 1,000 hours per 12-month period, unless the seasonal is project based for a specific period of time which is typically less than 12-months.
