What are the responsibilities and job description for the Sign Fabricator I position at City of Grand Rapids?
This is a Natural Progression position. Satisfactory completion of the assigned duties and responsibilities leads to appointment to Sign Fabricator II. This is technical support work making and mounting street and other signs. Work is performed under the continuing supervision of a Sign Fabricator III and guidance of a Sign Fabricator II. The employee is expected to learn and perform the duties of Sign Fabricator II while serving in this position.

- Installs street signs as needed, including maintenance, replacements, and removals
- Performs barricading and road closure procedures; interacts and coordinates with event planners and the general public to set up closures for special events
- Utilizes computerized work order system and GIS to install signs according to Michigan Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MMUTCD) guidelines
- Operates a variety of equipment to produce signs, as needed, including computers, screen printing table, vacuum exposure table, pressure washer, fabric stretcher, camera, and heat vacuum applicator
- Repairs and/or replaces damaged barricades, works with aluminum posts and brackets for various signage setups, and reads design plans for various street configurations
- Ensures equipment is in proper working order; performs preventive maintenance as needed
- Performs related work as required

Minimum Training and Experience- High School diploma (or GED equivalent)
- Any equivalent combination of training and experience.
Necessary Special Requirements
- Possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
- Ability to obtain a Work Zone Safety Specialist certification and an Associate Signs & Markings Specialist Level I certification.
THIS IS A SAFETY-SENSITIVE POSITION SUBJECT TO THE DEPT OF TRANSPORTATION (DOT) RANDOM DRUG & ALCOHOL TESTING PROGRAM. A DOT WAIVER FORM MUST BE COMPLETED WHEN AN APPLICATION IS SUBMITTED.
