POSITION SUMMARY
The purpose of this position is to conduct inspections on building for compliance with zoning ordinances, building codes and approved construction plans; issue electrical, mechanical and plumbing permits; initiate and administer code violation cases that deal with minimum building codes and dangerous buildings. The work is performed under the supervision of the Building Official.
Job Responsibilities (Includes, but not limited to)
- Inspects commercial, industrial and residential construction for compliance with approved construction plans and applicable codes and ordinances. Conducts follow-up inspections for violations.
- Issues certificates of occupancy.
- Issues building, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, sign and banner permits.
- Provides information to property owners, contractors, construction trades and others regarding correcting code violations, code requirements and zoning ordinance.
- Completes inspection reports; issues stop work orders and violation citations. Maintains inspection files and forms.
- Initiates court cases for violations and testifies in court as required
- All other duties as assigned
minimum qualifications
- Associate degree in building trades with three to five years’ construction management or supervisory experience, or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities
- Must be proficient in utilizing word processing, spreadsheet, and data base software programs
- Must possess strong interpersonal skills while working with a diverse population; have a proven ability to perform basic data analysis; and strong knowledge of personal computers
- Building inspection certifications required
- Possession of a valid state driver’s license
- Must successfully pass a background and reference checks
Preferred
- Possession of or acquisition of the applicable Residential Inspection, Commercial Inspection, and Plan Review Certifications from the International Code Council (ICC) would be highly preferred
Physical Demands & Work Environment
- Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or provide simple but continuous adjustment on equipment, machinery and tools such as motor vehicle, measuring tape, computer terminal, two-way radio, circuit tester, level and/or materials used in performing essential functions
- Requires the ability to coordinate eyes, hands, feet and limbs in performing movements requiring moderate skill, such as operating a motor vehicle
- Tasks involve the ability to exert moderate but not constant physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling objects and materials of moderate weight, twelve to twenty pounds
- Requires the ability to recognize and identify degrees of similarities or differences between characteristics of colors, shapes, sounds and textures associated with job-related objects, materials and tasks
Work will require travel to different locations and may be exposed to inclement weather conditions, noise, vibration, dust, or potentially hazardous chemicals. Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high and the employee may be exposed to loud talking and frequent interruptions from telephones, City staff, and/or members of the public. The nature of the work also requires incumbents to drive motorized vehicles and work in heavy vehicle traffic conditions. Must have the ability to lift up to 40 pounds or more; sit, stand, squat, kneel, climb stairs, stoop, and walk for prolonged periods of time; and get from one location to another in the course of doing business. May be exposed to highly stressful situations and individuals who are irate or hostile On an intermittent basis, sit at a desk for long periods of time; intermittently walk, stand, bend, squat, twist, and reach while performing office duties. Manual dexterity to use standard office equipment and supplies. Vision to read handwritten and printed material and a computer screen; hearing and speech to communicate in person and by telephone.
Pay
$20.24 - $34.05 hourly, depending on qualifications.
