What are the responsibilities and job description for the Trails Coordinator position at City of Great Falls?
Responsible for directing staff engaged in the operation, repair and maintenance of the City’s trails system. Work is performed under the general direction of the Parks Manager.
- Plans, organizes, and monitors skilled and semi-skilled employees in the operation and maintenance of the City’s trails system.
- Works with the Parks Manager to control and monitor the trails maintenance budget and expenditures.
- Participates in the preparation and supervision of the implementation of trail development and improvement plans and specifications with other City departments and government agencies, contractors, local vendors and non-profit organizations.
- Drafts specifications for purchases and supervises the purchase of supplies, equipment and materials.
- Coordinates trail construction plans and activities with other City departments and government agencies, contractors, local vendors and non-profit organizations.
- Represents the Department at public meetings to respond to issues, questions and concerns regarding the City’s trails system and related facilities.
- Coordinate and manage trail volunteer workers to help assist with the day-to-day maintenance of the trails system.
- Serves as City liaison on the River’s Edge Trail Foundation to coordinate priorities for trail maintenance and development of short-term, mid-term and long-term planning efforts.
- Assist with the development of grant applications working closely with special interest groups such as the River’s Edge Trail Foundation.
- Collect and keep current trail usage data, trail condition data and all other data that would help inform and direct non-motorized long-range transportation planning efforts. Keep inventories in River’s Edge Trail Maintenance Plan current and up-to-date.
- Act as City liaison with Fish, Wildlife and Parks on rural trail segments and in the coordination of trail maintenance and development on segments of the trail not owned by the City.
- Education and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in Horticulture, Landscape Architecture, or associate’s or bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology or a related field. *Candidates with substantial relevant work experience will also be considered in lieu of formal education.
- Three (3) years of professional experience in the maintenance, construction and development of trails and trails systems
- Ability to obtain a Montana Pesticide applicator’s license within 12 months.
- Ability to obtain CPR and First Aid certifications within 12 months
NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS
- Candidate must possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Montana Driver’s License
- Thorough knowledge of the methods, equipment, materials, plans and tools used in the operation, maintenance, repair, construction, landscaping in trails maintenance.
- Ability to assign, direct and evaluate the work of other employees.
- Ability to communicate, both orally and in writing.
- Proficient in the Microsoft Office suite of software, including Excel and Word.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, peers, supervisors, community groups, other government agencies and the general public.
- Project management, including budgeting, accounting desirable.
- Familiarity with managing, documenting and reporting upon grants is also desirable.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
This position does not supervise staff but provides technical guidance and work review for staff members
WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outside weather conditions and is exposed to cold, heat, noise, dust, vibration, chemicals, and mechanical hazards.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, bend, twist, reach, climb, push, pull, ride and perform similar body movements. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Possess hand/eye coordination sufficient to operate maintenance equipment, hand and power tools, and a motor vehicle; the ability to talk and hear in person or by telephone or two way radio; and the ability to see and read instructions and reports.
EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK
The work schedule is a 40-hour work week, Sunday through Saturday. Work is typically performed Monday through Friday. This position is non-exempt and eligible for overtime. Any overtime must be authorized prior to working.
TRAVEL
Travel is primarily local during the business day. Occasional travel may be required to attend off-site training and educational opportunities.
