Job Summary:
The Building Inspector inspects buildings at various stages of construction, alteration, and repair to ensure compliance with building codes, approved plans and specifications, and other applicable regulations and ordinances. This position has additional responsibilities including, but not limited to, determining code compliance, writing notices of violations, working with property owners / contractors to correct violations, drafting preliminary plans examining work, and reviewing and approving building plans.
Experience, Knowledge, Skills:
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in relevant field or comparable industry recognized certifications.
- One (1) to two (2) years of related construction, structural, electrical, plumbing or mechanical experience.
- Residential Wireman or Journeyman Electrical license.
- ICC Residential Building Inspector certification required within the first year of employment.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license.
OR
- Any combination of related education, experience, certifications and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job,
Preferred
- Strong emphasis on structural experience.
- Technical certificate
- Bilingual in English and Spanish.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Detailed knowledge in a specialized field such as accounting, programming, computer science, marketing, forestry, etc.
- Ability to selectively extract, verify, and compile data and/or operate specialized equipment to produce results.
- Knowledge of potential hazards including, but not limited to, lead-based paint, asbestos, electricity, etc., and have situational awareness to work safely in such conditions.
Travel
Approximately 10% flexible, local travel required.
Essential Functions:
- Inspect buildings during construction for integrity and adherence to city codes and ordinances.
- Ensure that code deficiencies are reported to the contractor / owner and corrected.
- Log inspection results into an iPad in the field, and in the office using TRAKiT.
- Issue summons (Notice of Violation) when necessary.
- Respond to question and inquiries from the public, contractors, architects, and engineers regarding building inspections, plan reviews, and codes.
- Complete forms and reports relating to inspections and logs inspections into the computer.
- Draft correspondence to owners, contractors, and groups.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:
- This position involves a combination of office work and fieldwork. Estimated 85% of the time is spent in an office environment, and 15% is spent at field sites or project locations.
- A standard office environment, which involves working at a desk or workstation for extended
- periods. The noise level is generally low to moderate, consistent with a typical office setting.
- Exposure to minimal hazards that are typically found in general office environment.
- Exposure to some field work to view assets and how information is collected.
- Fieldwork may involve exposure to outdoor weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, or snow. Work may take place on uneven or rough terrain, near construction sites, or in environments with moving machinery and equipment. Noise levels in the field can range from moderate to loud, depending on the project site.
Physical Requirements:
- Mobility: Ability to sit for extended periods at a desk or workstation, occasional walking or standing, ability to move throughout office location and project sites.
- Dexterity: Ability to perform repetitive movements for typing, writing, and operating office equipment.
- Strength: Ability to lift or carry objects weighing up to 15 pounds occasionally.
- Endurance: Ability to maintain focus and productivity for extended periods while performing job duties.
- Flexibility: Infrequent need to perform the following physical activities: bend/stoop/squat, climb stairs, push or pull, reach above shoulders
- Vision and Hearing: Sufficient visual ability to read printed or digital documents, view computer screens, and perform detail-oriented tasks. Adequate hearing to participate in verbal conversations, virtual, phone, and in person communications.
