Job Summary
The City of Greeley is looking for an energetic and knowledgeable Forestry Crew Supervisor. This position supervises and supports the work of a field-based maintenance crew performing various landscape, vegetation management, maintenance, and public facility and infrastructure repair, ensuring all tasks are completed safely, within budget, and in a timely manner in the City’s parks and public spaces.
Experience, Knowledge, Skills
Minimum Requirements
- Associates degree (two-year degree) or certification program of comparable length.
- Certified Arborist required.
- Willingness and ability to gain Tree Risk Assessment Qualification within 6 months of hire.
- Willingness and ability to gain Pesticide Applicator’s License within 12 months of hire.
Preferred
- Experience with ArcGIS Pro and Field Maps.
- Experience with tree risk assessments, aerial lift trucks, brush chippers, stump grinders, mini loaders.
- Minimum three (3) years supervisory experience.
- In-depth knowledge of ANSI A300 Tree Care Standards and ANSI 133 Safety Requirements for Arboriculture Operations.
- Experience with an electrical hazards awareness program and coordinating work with Qualified Line Clearance Arborists.
- Experience in code compliance processes and procedures.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of arboriculture practices.
- Knowledge of common pests and diseases found in forestry in Colorado.
- Experience with snowplows, snow blowers, snow brooms.
- An understanding and experience to read as-built drawings, construction plans, and ability to make comments on such plans.
- Ability to operate full-size pickup trucks, snowplows, tractors, backhoes, loaders, forklifts, ATV's.
- Knowledge of drafting tools, office equipment, measuring wheel, small hand tools.
- Must be skilled in crucial conversation and de-escalation in tense situations with various members of the community.
- Organizational skills, including the ability to set and meet goals and deadlines, manage appointments, create schedules, coordinate, and facilitate meetings, and decision making.
- Ability to work under pressure, manage multiple concurrent and competing tasks and responsibilities, and adapt to changing priorities while maintaining personal effectiveness.

Essential Functions
- Supervises, coaches, and works alongside full-time and seasonal maintenance employees.
- Prioritizes and assigns work to crew members and/or private contractors and citizen participants and participate in tasks/projects.
- Performs conflict management with employees.
- Assigns and coordinates the work tasks of outside contractors engaging in maintenance, repair and installation on properties and monitor those tasks.
- Procures required materials, file work orders and maintain written or electronic copies of project records.
- Leads staff and participates in performing a wide range of construction and maintenance tasks such as trash removal, leaf and debris removal, snow removal, repair and maintenance to public facilities, irrigation design and install, landscape design, and install, arboriculture and maintaining public infrastructure.
- Conducts general safety and hazard mitigation.
- Actively performs, as well as coaches’ staff on, skilled work tasks which may include irrigation repair and design, carpentry, plumbing, minor electrical work, and landscape design and construction.
- Operates and trains staff on all equipment necessary to complete assigned tasks.
- Monitors chemical application program and instructs staff on proper application techniques.
- Ensures all tracking forms are properly filled out and critical documentation is properly stored for record-keeping requirements.
- Assists leadership with budget monitoring and provides suggestions for budget adjustments, CIP project inspections and reports, and subordinate hiring practices including seasonal staff.
- Performs comment reviews for new CIP projects, plan reviews for all maintenance projects with areas directly supervised by this position and attends meetings or on-site inspections for construction projects.
- Assists with performance measures input and assist in the creation of new performance measurements.
- Makes recommendations for policy changes and assists in implementation.
- Performs frequent citizen contact as well as contact with other city departments.
- Communicates to Division leadership on projects and tasks throughout systems responsible for.
- Supervises Field Technicians and assists in scheduling and work assignments, conflict resolution, special event assignments and task completion review.
- Represents division in construction and project status meetings.
- Responds to concerns and relays information.
- Updates manager/superintendent on maintenance cycle, project updates as required.
- Solves a variety of problems in situations where there are substantially diversified procedures, specialized standards, and only limited standardization.
- Changes priorities or differing situations require the incumbent to consider which among many procedures should be followed in what sequence to achieve the required job results.

Travel

Work Environment and Physical Requirements
Work Environment
- Position is split between field and office environments.
- Position will be exposed to temperature extremes, extreme noise, confined spaces, charged electrical components, hazardous chemicals, and work around heavy equipment, as well as computer work and repetitive motions.
- Working from ladders and bucket trucks up to 40' in the air
Physical Requirements
- Working from standing and kneeling positions.
- Occasionally moving 50-to-100-pound items for standard grounds maintenance operations, shoveling heavy snow and mud. Working adjacent to heavy equipment as well as operating heavy equipment. Office environment includes computer screens, fluorescent lighting, and possible extensive periods of sitting or standing.
- Moderate to considerable physical effort that includes working from ladders in awkward positions.
- Frequent use of light or medium weight objects (e.g., 25-50 lbs.) and use of medium weight tools.
