Responsible for performing maintenance work of animal exhibits and live animal care and rehabilitation.
Examples of Duties
- Cleans cages, pens, yards, transport cages, displays, aquaria, and incubators for all animals and birds.
- Feeds and waters exhibit animals and birds. Picks up food and processes carcasses for feed.
- Exercises animals and handles animals as needed for education programs.
- Administers daily care to sick, injured, and orphaned wildlife, including dispensing medicine.
- Repairs and maintains holding facility and display construction.
- Oversees onsite animal care volunteers and interns; oversees cashiers and maintenance persons in Observation Building.
- Maintains records and files of animal husbandry.
- Presents wildlife interpretation and education tours and programs utilizing live animals, taxidermy mounts and skins, slides, films, etc.
- Follows all policies, procedures, and the philosophy that is set forth by the City of Green Bay Parks, Recreation, & Forestry Department.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Two years of course work at a college, university, or technical school in Zoology or closely related field.
- Experience in Farm or 4H courses and projects desirable.
- Valid driver's license and good driving record.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Some knowledge of principles and practices of animal husbandry and skill in handling animals.
- Some skills in directing volunteer workers.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Ability to establish effective relationships with staff, volunteers, and general public. Ability to work the required hours of the position.
Ability to perform the following activities
- Lifting and carrying up to 30 pounds.
- Frequent walking, standing, bending, twisting, squatting, crouching, and kneeling.
- Occasional sitting, climbing, pushing, and pulling.
- Ability to work in varied environmental conditions.
