SUPPORT FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY:
The Greensboro Fire Department supports the whole family. After one year of service, six weeks of paid caregiver leave is available for those with new children or caring for a sick family member. In addition, the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) provides "eligible employees" with up to 12 work weeks of unpaid leave in a 12-month period.
The City of Greensboro Fire Department is currently accepting applications for the 82nd Recruit Academy. Recruit training for the 82nd Academy will be an intense 24-week program of fire and EMT, This program demands high academic performance, daily rigorous physical activity, weight training, aerobic activities, periodic assessments on the physical abilities course, etc. Candidates must successfully complete all required physical training. Failure to do so at any point during the training period will result in termination. Upon successful completion of the training program, recruits will be assigned to a fire company (4-5 personnel) within the Emergency Services Division and serve a six-month probationary period. The normal work schedule once assigned to Emergency Services will consist of one day (24 hours) on-duty followed by two days (48 hours) off-duty. Candidates must be in excellent health and have no conditions which would restrict their ability to perform these duties safely. These conditions must be met at the time of application and maintained throughout the application process. No residency requirements presently exist. This job is Non-Exempt and is subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA)
Minimum Qualifications:
- Minimum age: 18 (at the time you apply)
- Must have a valid driver's license from state of residence, with a reasonable driving record and NO DWI convictions within 3 years of applying
- Must pass the Firefighters Abilities Test (FFAT), Suitability Test, and panel interview
- Must have a high school diploma/G.E.D. Certificate
- Must pass a rigid medical examination, drug screen, and background check
- Must be a United States citizen or authorized to work in the United States
- Applicants must list at least three references on their application
- Corrected vision shall be at least 20/20 (Titmus) for both eyes together, and each eye separately, uncorrected vision shall be at least 20/100 (Titmus) in both eyes together but must correct to 20/20 with glasses or soft contacts, color vision deficiency is not acceptable, monocular vision is not acceptable
- Hearing-cumulative loss shall not exceed pre-determined frequencies in either ear, shall not have a combined loss of greater than 160 dB in both ears, hearing aids are not acceptable
An Ideal Candidate Would Also Possess (Preferred Qualifications):
- College Degree/ related coursework with experience
- Previous Experience as a Professional Firefighter
Recruitment Process Timeline for the 82nd Academy is as follows:
- Physical and written testing will take place in March 2025.
- Interviews are scheduled for April/May, with final selections expected to be made by June 2025.
- The anticipated start date for the 82nd Academy is planned for September 2025
