About the Role:
The Solid Waste Operator is an entry level position. This position heavily involves heavy manual collections of bulk, and/or uncontained items and requires frequent walking, bending, lifting, and carrying. Work involves being outside in all weather conditions.
The Solid Waste Operator position operates and drives a rear loading solid waste collection truck. The selected applicant must possess the ability to service refuse, recycling, and bulk waste customers in a safe and efficient manner. The employee must possess the ability to follow written and heuristically prepared routes, use two-way radios, communicate both orally and in written form and complete daily survey and vehicle inspection forms. This employee must be willing and able to cross-train in other duties within the Special Services Operations.
Work is done with limited supervision and the employee must demonstrate team-oriented work ethics. Solid Waste Operators work closely with other operators performing the same tasks. It is important to maintain a positive perspective and willingness to assist where needed. Good customer service is important in this position.
The City of Greensboro pays employees bi-weekly and the position is assigned to a 40-hour work schedule. This schedule is subject to change during a holiday week or for emergency service which may require working a flexible schedule with little or no notice and may include Wednesdays, weekends or holidays. Early morning reporting times and working during inclement weather are required. This employee must have good attendance.
The physical duties include: standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, walking on uneven surfaces, shoveling, and heavy lifting up to 50 pounds. Work is performed outside in all weather conditions. This employee must obtain and maintain a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License within 180 days for employment in order to remain in this position. This employee must maintain a reliable means of contact such as home or cellular telephone. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply. This job is NON-EXEMPT under FLSA.
What You Bring:
- Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma/GED with 1 years' experience operating vehicles that require a commercial driver's license. or No high school diploma/GED with 5-7 years experience operating vehicles that require a commercial driver's license
- Preferred Qualifications:
- Solid waste collection experience (refuse, recycling, etc.).
- Valid Class A or B CDL.
