MAINTENANCE WORKER (PARKS)

The City of Groveport, Ohio, is central Ohio's small town. Groveport is a growing City in southeastern Franklin County. The community has a state of the art recreation and aquatic center, a world class golf course, an excellent arts and education program, several parks and a quaint Main Street historic area. We are looking for a Maintenance Worker to join our team and work closely with the Parks Maintenance Department. This is a great opportunity with a very competitive starting salary and great benefits including vacation, sick leave, health, dental, vision and life insurance.

PURPOSE:

Perform all required duties and responsibilities pertaining to the operation, maintenance, construction, and renovation of city parks, playgrounds, athletic facilities, buildings, swimming pools, natural areas, tennis courts, leisure paths, landscapes, and ponds.

QUALIFICATIONS:

High school education or equivalent. Minimum 18 years of age; Prior experience in grounds maintenance; Ability to work overtime/on call as needed; Ability to learn and adapt to evolving job responsibilities..

LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Must possess the ability to obtain First Aid/CPR certification no later than first available training session after hire; must possess/obtain a valid Ohio CDL-A license with Air Brakes and Tanker Endorsements within 12 months of hire date and maintain insurability under the Municipality’s vehicles insurance policy; Preference to possess/obtain Pesticide Applicator Licensing with the Ohio Department of Agriculture, such as Aquatic, Forest Pest, Industrial Vegetation, Mosquito and Other Vector, Ornamental Pest, Turf Pest, Greenhouse, and Fertilization.

EQUIPMENT OPERATED: The following are examples only and are not intended to be all inclusive:

Automobile, snowplow, push mower, riding mower, tractor, utility vehicle, skid steer, loader, trencher, post hole auger, concrete mixer, trimmers, saws, rototiller, fertilizer and salt spreader, pesticide sprayer, power broom, hand and power tools, motor vehicles used for maintenance and/or construction projects, cellular phone, personal computer, computer software, printer, copy machines, fax machines, and other standard business office equipment.

INHERENTLY HAZARDOUS OR PHYSICALLY DEMANDING WORKING CONDITIONS:

The employee has exposure to chemical compounds found in an office environment (e.g., toner, correction fluid, etc.); works in the vicinity of floor or wall openings, elevated platforms, and/or runways; ascends and/or descends ladders, stairs, or scaffolds, works in a confined space; works in an area in which means of egress is or can be obstructed; works on and around powered platforms and/or vehicle mounted platforms; is exposed to environmental conditions which may result in injury from fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and/or poorly ventilated work areas; exposed to possible injury from extremely noisy conditions above 85db; exposed to possible injury from hazardous gases, chemicals, flammables, air contaminants unclean or unsanitary conditions, electrical shock; works with moving mechanical parts of equipment or machines (e.g., mowers, trimmers, chainsaws, tractors, tillers, etc.); exposed to possible injury from falling from high places; works in or around crowds; has contact with potentially violent or emotionally distraught persons or vicious animals or life threatening situations; has exposure to fire, hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy weather conditions; exposure to extreme nonweather-related heat or cold; exposure to hazardous driving conditions; has exposure to shaking objects or surfaces; frequently lifts objects 75 lbs or less; frequently carries objects 75 lbs or less; frequently pushes objects 100 lbs or less; frequently pulls objects 100 lbs or less.

Note: In accordance with the U.S. Department of Labor physical demands strength ratings, this is considered medium work.

JOB DESCRIPTION AND WORKER CHARACTERISTICS:

JOB DUTIES in order of importance

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION: For purposes of 42 USC 12101:

50% (1) Performs a variety of semi-skilled groundskeeping activities including but not limited to: mowing, trimming, aerating, fertilizing, blowing, and spraying; installing, maintaining, renovating and removing tree and landscape material; cleaning up debris and storm damage; maintaining park amenities; assisting with greenhouse operation; assisting with setup and execution of city events.

20% (2) Participates in the plowing, shoveling, sweeping, and salting of city streets, parking lots, walkways, and entrances as directed.

20% (3) Assists with, as necessary, the maintenance of all vehicles, equipment, and buildings. Maintains appropriate maintenance records deemed necessary per department policy.

10% (4) Maintains safe and proper conditioning for all athletic fields (e.g., mows, trims, weed eats, paints regulation lines, places goal boxes for games, etc.).

(5) Maintains positive and engaging demeanor throughout all encounters with vendors, contractors, general public, suppliers, industry professionals, and various government agencies/officials in order to obtain or disseminate information related to the essential position functions.

(6) Maintains required licensures and certification.

(7) Comprehends and maintains all job safety requirements and all applicable OSHA safety standards that pertain to essential functions.

(8) Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE CHARACTERISTICS: (*indicates developed after employment)

Knowledge of: inventory control; purchasing; *municipal operational goals and objectives; *municipal policies and procedures pertaining to personnel employment and job retention *government structure and process; workplace safety practices and procedures; *emergency medical care procedures; including first aid and C.P.R. practice; grounds maintenance and repair; *community resources and services operations; English grammar and spelling; workplace safety; practices and procedures; *local geographical area and demographic; general construction principles; equipment maintenance and repair; vehicle maintenance and repair; grounds maintenance and repair; inventory and records management; two-way radio operations; snow and ice removal; proper lifting techniques; grounds keeping (fertilization, aeration; irrigation, mowing, spraying weed control, disease identification, etc.); athletic field maintenance; heavy equipment operation;

Demonstrated Skill in: motor vehicle operation; bench, hand, and mechanics tools; power equipment (e.g., chain saws, chippers, trimmers, blowers, edgers, etc.); turf maintenance and removal equipment operation; heavy equipment operation (e.g., skid steer, loader, backhoe, tractor, bucket truck, scissor lift).

Ability to: interpret and carry out a variety of instructions and communications in written, verbal, picture, or schedule form; understand blueprints; receive and enter data utilizing electronic software programs; interpret numerous variables and determine specific course of action; recognize unsafe or threatening conditions and take appropriate action; recognize issues, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; exercise independent judgment and discretion; understand, interpret, and apply laws, rules, or regulations to specific situations; determine material and equipment needs; add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers; complete routine forms; prepare routine correspondence; compile and prepare pertinent information as needed; train or instruct others; maintain records according to established procedures; work independently and responsibly when working alone be a productive and positive contributor to co-worker relationships and group projects; properly handle sensitive inquiries from and contacts with officials and general public; promote ideas to improve job proficiencies and overall satisfaction of the position; productively resolve complaints; work in both indoor and outdoor environments, often being exposed to varying and extreme weather conditions; provide outstanding customer service; perform challenging jobs for extended periods of time, often in adverse conditions; carry out instructions; work under stressful conditions and deadlines; travel to and gain access to work site; work all hours deemed necessary by employer.

Salary:

$22.62 to $29.83 per hour
