The purpose of the class is to provide the day-to-day security administration of operating systems (OSs) and network security devices, as well as the management of technologies such as antivirus, anti-spam, antispyware, and Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) tools. This class works on developing and implementing programs within organizational policies and reports major work activities. May supervise others.
What you will be doing:
- Administering the security of operating systems, applications and network security devices. Monitors network traffic, user access and endpoints for threats and suspicious behavior.
- Performing risk assessments to include the review of policies, compliance tools, network security appliances and host-based security systems. Tests for threats and vulnerability and performs appropriate remedial action when necessary.
- Collaborate with IT system engineers and administrators in managing the installation and configuration of security systems and applications according to defined policies, standards, procedures and industry best practices.
- Provide guidance and training to IT system engineers and administrators regarding mitigation of known control weaknesses, such as unnecessary services or applications or user redundant accounts, as a means of hardening systems according to security policies and standards.
- Identify security problems and failures and provides recommended resolutions.
- Analyze security incidents and event data and produces monthly reports.
- Report unresolved network security exposures, misuse of resources or noncompliance situations using defined escalation processes.

Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems or equivalent work experience. ·
- Minimum of five (5) years of IT or Network Security experience.
- Requires knowledge of cybersecurity principles, including risk assessment and management, threat and vulnerability management, incident response, and identity and access management.
- Requires knowledge of network infrastructure, including routers, switches, firewalls and associated network protocols and concepts.
- Strong knowledge of TCP/IP and network administration/protocols.
- Microsoft certification or other industry standard certification related to information and network security are preferred.
- Must successfully pass a background check related to this position prior to any offer of employment or promotion.
- May require working beyond the standard 40-hour work week to include evenings and weekends.
- The incumbent may be considered “essential personnel” during City emergency situations or at the direction of the City Manager which may include long hours and unusual schedules.
