What are the responsibilities and job description for the Public Works/Streets and Bridges - Technician Trainee position at City of Hampton?
The purpose of the class is to serve in a trainee capacity to learn to perform a variety of technical duties in the operation and maintenance of the City’s streets and bridges for the Department of Public Works Street and Bridge Operations. The class works under close supervision according to set procedures.
Minimum Requirements
- Requires high school graduation or GED.
- Requires a minimum of three months of full-time equivalent experience in the operation of a variety of mechanical equipment, manual and power tools, or closely related experience.
- This position is safety sensitive and is subject to testing for alcohol and controlled substances in accordance with the City’s current substance abuse policy.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record based on the City of Hampton’s criteria.
- Must be able to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Class B with an N-endorsement (Tanker Vehicle) within 180 days of employment.
- Must successfully pass a background check related to this position prior to any offer of employment or promotion.
Additional Requirements
- May require some shift work to include evenings, weekends, and holidays
- The incumbent may be considered “essential personnel” during City emergency situations or at the direction of the City Manager which may include long hours and unusual schedules.
- The incumbent may be administratively upgraded to the Streets and Bridges Equipment Operator position at the discretion of the Director of Public Works upon successfully meeting minimum qualifications.
