Description
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The Sign Shop Worker is responsible for performing a variety of semi-skilled tasks in the production, repair and installation of street signs and pavement markers. Duties include the operation of standard hand and power tools, and the occasional operation of light power-driven equipment. Work is performed under the supervision of a Sign Shop Specialist, who evaluates work through observation, on-site inspections and compliance with instructions.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

- Fabricating sign stands, producing signs, using vacuum and self-sensitive adhesive applicators, and painting various streets, pavement markers, and other signs.
- Installation of signs by attaching signs to posts, digging holes, and setting signs with cement.
- Setup of construction zone traffic control.
- Operates motorized paint striper to apply continuous and staggered lines to streets; operates small walking paint striper to apply lines in parking lots.
- Performs carpentry work to assist in the construction and repair of traffic barricades.
- Performs other related work as required.
- Observes all safety regulations and communicates unsafe conditions or accidents/ injuries to supervisor in order to facilitate prompt correction or reporting.
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Additional Requirements:
- This classification requires the use of City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record.
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon assignment.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED & EXERCISED
- General supervision is received from the Sign Shop Specialist.
- This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES
Knowledge of:
- Practices, materials, tools, and equipment used in the fabrication and painting of various traffic signs.
- Work hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with the fabrication and installation of street and traffic signs.
Ability to:
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Use standard equipment and hand tools used in the production and installation of street and traffic signs.
- Operate a variety of light to medium motorized equipment used to paint lines on streets and parking lots.
- Operate power tools such as drills, rivet guns, saws, spray guns and precision cutting tools.
- Work cooperatively with other City employees and the public.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
- Observe or monitor objects to determine compliance with prescribed specifications.
Education & Experience:
- High School diploma or equivalent; or six (6) months of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Licenses, Certificates & Registrations:
- Valid Texas Driver License.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The employee is regularly required to use hands to handle; reach with hands and arms; stoop; and crouch. The employee frequently is required to climb. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
WORKING CONDITIONS
The employee is occasionally exposed to outdoor weather conditions and moving vehicle traffic. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
