What are the responsibilities and job description for the TEMP PARKS LABORER position at City of Helena, MT?
DEFINITION
Performs tasks associated with maintenance and development of parks, open space, and city-owned
property. Tasks may include but not be limited to garbage and litter control; tree, shrub, and flower
maintenance, mowing, trimming, and watering turf areas.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under direct supervision of Parks Supervisor and / or the Natural Resource Coordinator.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
None
EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Picks up garbage, litter, glass, etc.
Manually waters turf and shrub areas.
Hand mows and trims turf grass areas.
Keeps buildings, restrooms, and picnic areas clean.
Keeps sidewalks clean from glass, dirt, rocks, etc.
Performs maintenance on trees, shrubs and flower areas.
Paints park structures and fixtures as needed.
Safely operates such equipment as push mowers and string trimmers.
Performs any additional maintenance as instructed.
Performs other duties as assigned.
SAFETY RELATED DUTIES:
Abide by the City of Helena and department/division work practices established for specific job
assignments and occupations.
Report occupational injuries, illnesses and near misses immediately to their supervisor. Follow supervisor
instructions for obtaining first aid and/or medical attention. Participate in accident investigations as
requested by the supervisor.
Participate fully in safety training. Suggest improvements in safety training requirements or programs to
the supervisor or the safety committee.
Identify unsafe work conditions and unsafe practices. Correct hazards or report them to the supervisor or
safety committee as appropriate.
JOB RELATED AND ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Safe driving principles and practices.
Turf, landscape and building maintenance.
Skill to:
Safely operate lawnmowers, and string trimmers.
Operate department equipment and perform maintenance tasks using a variety of hand and power tools.
Ability to:
Perform or quickly learn the variety of skills needed to perform assigned duties.
Establish and maintain positive relationships with City employees, supervisors and the public.
Physical Demands
Ability to sit, stand, walk, stoop, climb, kneel, twist, and lift 50 lbs.; exposure to cold, heat, noise,
ability to travel to different sites and locations.
Work Environment
Works outside frequently in all weather conditions.
Experience and Training Guidelines:
Any combination equivalent to experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills,
and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:
- Experience/Training:
- Previous experience in turf and landscape maintenance; ability to work with people; some organizational skills, and the ability to follow instructions responsibly.
- License or Certificate:
- Possession of a valid MT drivers license with acceptable driving record.
