DEFINITION
This position is responsible for overseeing and directing daily scheduled activities revolving around the theme of the week, arts and crafts, games, and other activities for a summer playground program for school-aged children, 6- 11 years old.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Supervised by the Recreation Site Leader and Recreation Supervisor.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Recreation leaders are responsible to supervise school-aged children engaged in activities.
EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Organize, supervise, and conduct recreational and educational activities for children in an outdoor playground setting.
Create weekly calendars, track daily attendance, and distribute surveys.
Monitor supplies and equipment levels and inform recreation supervisor when more supplies and equipment are needed.
Supervise and prepare children for guest speakers and field trips.
Attend staff meetings.
OTHER JOB RELATED DUTIES
Perform other duties as assigned.
SAFETY RELATED DUTIES:
Abide by the City of Helena and department/division work practices established for specific job assignments and occupations.
Report occupational injuries, illnesses and near misses immediately to their supervisor. Follow supervisor instructions for obtaining first aid and/or medical attention. Participate in accident investigations as requested by the supervisor.
Participate fully in safety training. Suggest improvements in safety training requirements or programs to the supervisor or the safety committee.
Identify unsafe work conditions and unsafe practices. Correct hazards or report them to the supervisor or safety committee as appropriate.

Physical Demands/ Work Environment
Sit, stand, see, hear, stoop, climb and crawl. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, ability to work in outdoor environment with hot and cold weather. Ability to travel to other locations.
Experience and Training Guidelines:
Any combination equivalent to experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:
- Experience:
One year performing child care or working at any other child centered facility
- Training:
High school education or equivalent preferred
Completion of a certified babysitting course preferred, but not required.
License or Certificate:
CPR and First Aid training must be completed within two weeks of hire (training/certification will be provided by the City.)
