Job Description:

Responsible for performing responsible semi-skilled and skilled work in the operation of medium and large motorized equipment related to maintenance, repair and rehabilitation of city parks and public streets and grounds. An employee in this class operates medium and large motorized equipment to mow and maintain city properties and rights-of-way and to collect and dispose of leaves and other yard waste. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Property Maintenance Supervisor and is evaluated by visual inspection of work, periodic meetings, compliance with safety procedures, and overall quantity and quality of work performed.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Operates mowing tractor with attachments to bush hog and mow rights-of-way.
  • Operates push or riding mower and weed eater to mow and trim grass.
  • Operates leaf blower or leaf rack to collect leaves; and operates leaf vacuum to collect leaves.
  • Operates track hoe, skid steer and other specialized motorized equipment to perform assigned tasks.
  • Cleans and maintains work area and buildings.
  • Collects brush and tree limbs and shreds using gas powered woodchipper.
  • Assists with winter snow removal.
  • Works outside normal work hours in an emergency or on-call basis.
  • Performs other related job duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

High school diploma; and one (1) year of experience in general maintenance of facilities and buildings; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Qualifications:

  • Possession of a valid Class B Driver’s License to operate a motor vehicle. Requirement exists at the time of hire and as a condition of continued employment.

  • Flagger Certification

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of operating small, medium and large equipment
  • Knowledge of hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with assigned area of work
  • Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations
  • Skills in the use of equipment to which assigned.
  • Ability to perform assigned work for extended periods.
  • Ability to follow oral and written directions.
  • Ability to perform minor repairs to equipment.
  • Ability to interact courteously with the public; establish and maintain working relationships with supervisor, crew members and the general public.
  • Ability to follow instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work in this classification is defined as heavy work requiring the physical exertion of in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, handling and repetitive motions. Work requires dexterity in the hands for typing and operation of standard office equipment and visual acuity is necessary to read handwritten and typewritten materials and to operate a computer terminal. Vocal communication is required to express or exchange ideas. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels. Visual acuity is required for depth perception, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection of products, operation of machines, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities. Employee must have the stamina to work for extended periods, some of which in emergency situations.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is primarily performed in outside environmental conditions including extreme heat and cold with snow and ice. Employee is subject to noise which may cause the employee to shout in order to be heard above the ambient noise level. Employee is subject to vibration, such as exposure to oscillating movements of the extremities or whole body and is also subject to workplace hazards including proximity to moving mechanical parts or exposure to chemicals, oils, fuels, and potential for blood borne pathogens in raw untreated sewage. Employee is subject to atmospheric conditions due to exposure to fumes, odors, dusts and oils. May work in close quarters, crawl spaces, shafts, manholes, small areas of water lines, and other areas which could cause claustrophobia.
