YOUR PURPOSE
We're looking for a dedicated and reliable Water Plant Operator to help keep our community supplied with clean, safe water. In this important role, you'll help manage the daily operations of our water pumping and purification systems, making sure that homes and businesses have the water they need. You'll also help maintain the reserves required for fire protection, while ensuring everything runs smoothly at our water treatment facilities. As part of a supportive team, you'll receive guidance and supervision to ensure your work is done safely and in line with industry standards.


WHAT YOU’LL DO
Monitor Water System Operations: Regularly check and monitor gauges and indicators to ensure optimal water flow and plant operations. Accurately record results, calibrate meters as needed, and ensure proper plant functionality.
Routine Equipment Checks: Perform periodic inspections of motors, pumps, filters, and chemical feeders. Adjust settings and report malfunctions to supervisors for corrective action.
Conduct Testing: Carry out routine physical and chemical tests on water quality, recording results or sending samples to the laboratory for comprehensive testing. Interpret lab data to assess water quality and ensure compliance with safety standards.
Chemical Management: Replenish chemicals in treatment equipment and adjust chemical levels as necessary. Change charts on recording meters and gauges to maintain accurate documentation.
•Valve Operations: Open and close valves as needed, which may involve entering confined spaces and working in manholes, ensuring that all operations comply with safety regulations.
•Sample Collection: Collect water samples from designated points throughout the treatment facility for testing and analysis.
•Routine Maintenance: Perform general maintenance and custodial duties at the plant, keeping basins, lagoons, and filters free of debris and foreign matter to ensure uninterrupted operations.
•Safety and Compliance: Ensure all tasks are performed in accordance with OSHA regulations and City Safety Standards. Actively participate in safety drills and adhere to safety policies at all times.


WHAT YOU"LL BRING

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
•High School diploma or GED 
•Be at least 18 years of age. 
•Possess a valid driver's license.
•Flexibility to work nights, weekends, and holidays as scheduled or as required.
•Once hired, must obtain a State Grade C Water Operator Certificate within 18 months of employment to maintain the role.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
•An associate’s degree in a related field, with a strong foundation in Algebra and science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics) 
•Some knowledge or experience in mechanics or water treatment

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Hearing/Speaking – Necessary to converse with internal and external customers, co-workers, citizens, supervisor, contractors, visitors, and vendors. Operator uses plant phone system, cell phone, PA system, and two-way radio.
Visual Abilities – Required for this position:
•Acuity, far – Clarity of vision at 20 feet or more to monitor panel lights and ensure proper operation. Must be able to operate a motor vehicle. Both eyes 20/25 – R20/30 – L 20/30 corrected.
•Acuity, near – Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less to see hand tools, instruments, panelboard, samples, containers, and work-related documents. Both eyes 20/22 corrected.
•Depth perception – Must judge distance and space relationships, using both hands in different tasks and seeing the entire work area.
•Field of Vision – Must see a wide span of area to cover grounds and ensure safety while observing instruments.
•Accommodation – Ability to adjust lens for sharp focus, especially for near-point work while glancing at equipment or people at varying distances.
•Color – Must distinguish colors to monitor SCADA system.
Physical Strength – Includes:
•Medium Work – Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally; up to 20 pounds frequently; up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.
•Physical Demands – Reaching, handling, tasks requiring manual dexterity, walking, standing, bending, stooping, lifting, climbing, and stretching. Significant use of arms, hands, legs, and feet, with occasional sitting.
MENTAL ACTIVITY/REQUIREMENTS
•Reasoning – Apply logical thinking and judgment to tasks, practical situations, requests, interpret lab data, and discern normal vs. abnormal plant operations.
•Mathematics Ability – Essential for laboratory analyses and plant functions.
•Language Ability – Ability to speak, read, and write English for safety materials, instructions, reports, and communication with coworkers and supervisors in person, over PA, phone, and two-way radio.
Training Required – On-the-job training takes approximately 6 months.
Environmental Conditions
•Physical Surroundings – Exposure to inside and outside environmental conditions such as temperature changes.
•Hazards – Exposure to chemicals like nitric acid, acetone, phenylarsine oxide, polymer, sodium hydroxide, sodium hypochlorite, fluoride, and more, with risks of electrocution, falling, exposure to hazardous gases, and dangerous equipment. Work is subject to OSHA’s bloodborne pathogens standards.
•Machinery/Tools/Work Aids/Other Equipment – Must wear a respirator when required. Tools include laboratory equipment, dissolved oxygen meters, pH meters, ammonia meters, respirometer, microscope, hand tools, two-way radio, flashlights, air packs, motorized equipment, city vehicles, and various operating forms and logs.
