YOUR PURPOSE 
Join our team as a Water Plant Supervisor, where you’ll play a vital role in ensuring that the City of High Point provides clean, safe drinking water to its residents and businesses. This position is essential to maintaining the integrity of our water treatment operations, overseeing regulatory compliance, and leading a team of plant operators to meet daily and long-term water demands.
As a Water Plant Supervisor, you will be responsible for monitoring and optimizing plant performance, maintaining compliance with environmental and safety regulations, and ensuring the reliability of our water distribution system. You will also oversee equipment maintenance, manage chemical inventories, and provide technical expertise to support the city's commitment to water quality.
This role requires strong leadership, attention to detail, and a proactive approach to problem-solving. You will work closely with plant operators and management to ensure smooth operations while also engaging with customers and regulatory agencies to uphold our high standards.
The position includes occasional weekend and holiday work, rotating shifts, and emergency call-ins as needed. You’ll report to the Assistant Water Plant Superintendent and/or Water Plant Superintendent and have supervisory responsibilities over plant operators.WHAT YOU’LL DO 
  • Lead, schedule, and oversee the work of plant operators.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and enforce OSHA safety standards.
  • Manage training, personnel administration, and regulatory compliance.
  • Maintain chemical inventory and coordinate orders as needed.
  • Monitor plant operations, ensuring efficiency and compliance with water treatment standards.
  • Oversee maintenance, repair, and installation of plant equipment.
  • Maintain records on chemical usage, plant operations, and unaccounted-for water.
  • Ensure regulatory sampling plans are up to date and comply with changing regulations.
  • Provide facility tours and assist customers with water quality inquiries.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS 
  1. Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Environmental Science, Chemistry, or related field of study. A minimum of 2-years of water/wastewater utility operations experience.  OR
  2. Associate degree in Biology, Environmental Science, Chemistry, or related field of study supplemented by technical course work in water/wastewater utility and engineering.   A minimum of 4-years of water/wastewater utility operations experience.  OR
  3. High School Diploma and a minimum of 6-years of water/wastewater utility operations experience. 
  4. Must hold a Grade “A” Surface Water Certificate AND obtain a Grade 1 Physical/Chemical Wastewater Certification within 18 months.
  5. Willing to be on-call as needed (after hours, weekends, and holidays) to address urgent technical issues and to address operator schedule issues.
  6. Proficient in computer applications with advanced skills in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  7. Extensive knowledge of standard office practices, procedures, and equipment, as well as expertise in data communication systems and budget management processes.
  8. Demonstrated ability to cultivate strong working relationships with city departments, team members, and the public.
  9. In-depth understanding of water treatment theory and operational procedures.
  10. Exceptional attention to detail, coupled with a high level of professionalism in all aspects of work.

Hearing/Speaking:
  • Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas verbally.
  • Hearing: Ability to perceive sound, with average hearing of 40 decibels in each of the 1000, 2000, and 3000 Hz frequency ranges.
  • Visual Abilities
:
  • Acuity (Far): Ability to see clearly at 20 feet or more. Must be able to see terrain, people, vehicles, and buildings from a distance. Vision must be corrected to 20/25 (R 20/30, L 20/30).
  • Acuity (Near): Ability to see clearly at 20 inches or less. Must be able to read work-related documents and equipment details, corrected to 20/22.
  • Depth Perception: Ability to judge distance and space, essential for performing tasks safely and accurately.
  • Field of Vision: Ability to see a wide span to remain alert to surroundings while focused on tasks.
  • Accommodation: Ability to adjust focus to work at varying distances.
  • Color Vision: Ability to distinguish colors, important for SCADA computer use, laboratory testing, troubleshooting plant operations.
  • Night Vision: Ability to identify objects at night, with acuity corrected to 20/40.
  • Respiratory: Ability to use respiratory protective equipment, such as facemasks.
  • Senses: Must have functional sight, smell, hearing, and touch.
  • Physical Stamina: Ability to work under various weather conditions.
  • Physical Strength
:
  • Medium Work:
    • Up to 50 pounds of force occasionally.
    • Up to 20 pounds of force frequently.
    • Up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects or equipment.
    • Requires walking, standing, climbing, carrying, bending, stooping, lifting, reaching, stretching, balancing, and sitting on various surfaces.
  • Physical Demands
:
  • Reaching: Extending arms in any direction.
  • Handling: Seizing, holding, grasping, or turning with hands.
  • Manual Dexterity: Ability to pick, pinch, or work primarily with fingers. Must have flexibility to work in confined spaces, use both hands while climbing ladders, and install small items such as washers, screws, and fuses.
  • Mental Activity/Requirements
:
  • Reasoning: Ability to apply logical thinking to tasks and situations, respond quickly in emergencies, and follow safety protocols.
  • Mathematics: Basic arithmetic for measuring parts, tools, and supplies, preparing reports, and solving wastewater equations.
  • Language Ability:
    • Reading: Ability to read safety and operation manuals, blueprints and diagrams, equipment instructions and other documents relating to the job.
    • Writing: Ability to write reports and record information clearly.
    • Speaking: Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers, supervisors, and others, especially in emergencies.
  • Environmental Conditions
:
  • Physical Surroundings: Exposed to both indoor and outdoor environments, including extreme temperatures, rain, snow, and hazardous substances like pollen and creosote.
  • Hazards: Exposure to grease, lubricants, petroleum products, hazardous materials, and chemicals in a utility facility. Work must follow OSHA’s bloodborne pathogen standards.
  • Machinery/Tools/Work Aids
  • Equipment includes service vehicles, SCADA systems, radios, laboratory equipment, gauges, valves, pumps, and various mechanical tools.
