Description of Primary Purpose
Primary Purpose:
Operate Transit Bus; providing passengers with safe, efficient and courteous service.
Supervision Received:
Works under the immediate supervision of the Transit Coordinator.
Supervision Exercised:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Involves all duties and responsibilities with transit vehicle operation. Duties include carrying out those functions pertaining to the safe, courteous, and efficient operation of assigned transit vehicles on routine. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, employing defensive driving techniques, maintaining professional courtesy while under stress, making public address announcements, properly answering questions and solving transit-related concerns of passengers, and exercising prudent judgment under a variety of constantly changing operating conditions.
- Completing reports to facilitate recordkeeping (Trip Sheets, Maintenance, Accidents, Safety Test)
- Performs pre-trip inspection of transit bus for mechanical problems prior to beginning scheduled run. This includes conducting an external/internal visual inspection of the transit bus and pre-testing all necessary equipment, operating/safety devices, and transit bus controls for use while in service. Also conducts an internal visual inspection at the end of revenue service to collect and turn-in lost items.
- Performs other related duties as requested.
Education and Experience
Required Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
Graduation from high school or a GED equivalent. Good written and oral communications skills and knowledge of basic math are necessary.
Experience:
Two years of experience Bus Operation and Transit Systems. Ability to deal with the public in a courteous and professional manner is essential.
Certification or license:
Possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class B, with a passenger endorsement and air-brake qualified and an Illinois Secretary State certified abstract record of safe driving for 5 years, or equivalent. Must meet and maintain all DOT physical examination requirements including drug and alcohol screening.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Proficiencies:
Safely operates the City bus, employs standard Defensive Driving techniques, while maintaining the scheduled time-table. Operates the mobile radio to facilitate passenger connections and to receive direction from dispatch. Responsible for reporting accidents, detours and route problems to dispatch. Fuels vehicle at shift's end. Maintains the appropriate records and completes all required paperwork. Operates the wheelchair lift when required and employs proper securement procedures. Maintains the interior of the bus in a clean and safe manner. Responds to road blockages, detours, etc., in a safe and professional manner.
