Under the direct supervision of the Recreation Supervisor of Aquatics, Recreation Coordinator of Aquatics, and Pool Manager, a Lead Lifeguard is responsible for the health and safety of pool participants through careful observation of the pools and surrounding areas, quick response to emergency situations, enforcing pool rules in connection with the prevention of accidents and providing emergency intervention as required, guest services, and assist Pool Managers with operating the facility, performing general office duties, managing lifeguard staff, water quality and balancing, and pump and filtration monitoring.

- Possess thorough knowledge of and consistently enforces policies, rules and regulations, in connection with preventing accidents and injuries.
- Scan and monitors all patrons in swimming pools and responds immediately in an emergency.
- Safeguard and regulate the conduct of pool patrons.
- Help create an outstanding work environment, as well as set the bar for providing exceptional customer service to both internal and external customers.
- Maintain cleanliness of their assigned facility, entryways, walkways, concession area, guard lounge, offices, filter rooms, and bathrooms.
- Follow appropriate emergency action plan protocol as needed and provides emergency intervention while following proper protocol.
- Properly use equipment in the performance of first aid and/or other emergency response.
- Clear all swimmers from pools according to the pool procedures for inclement weather, emergencies, rest periods, drills and closings.
- Provide professional and courteous service to all patrons.
- Remain undistracted from the primary area of responsibility for patron and facility safety.
- Instructs programs such as swim lessons and special programs as required.
- Assists with pool maintenance and cleaning to include (but not limited to) opening and closing procedures, cleaning duties and supervision during hourly rest periods/adult swim time.
- Assists in the office as scheduled/needed and handles money with honesty and integrity.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Recreation Coordinators, Recreation Supervisors, Recreation Program Managers, Deputy Director of Recreation and Parks, or the Director of Recreation and Parks or their designee.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to swim with proficiency and endurance.
- Knowledge of water rescue methods.
- Knowledge of lifeguarding and first-aid techniques.
- Ability to apply first-aid.
- Knowledge and ability to administer CPR.
- Ability to maintain surveillance over patrons using the pools.
- Ability to handle money with honesty and integrity.
- Ability to work independently.
- Basic computer knowledge.
- Ability to exhibit professional behavior and to be a positive role model to other staff.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to supervise, direct, instruct, and solicit cooperation from others in the performance of their daily work assignments and duties.
- Ability to compile and prepare reports and maintain accurate records.
- Ability to exercise independent judgement, discretion, and to enforce rules and regulations to the public.
- Ability to answer inquiries, resolve complaints, and communicate with the public in an effective, tactful courteous, and professional manner.
- Ability to implement Emergency Action Plans and emergency response plans.
- Compliance with training directives established by supervisory and management personnel.
- Adherence to all applicable federal, state and local safety laws, rules and regulations and City policies/procedures.
Typical Qualifications:
- 16 years of age or older.
- One or more years experience as a City of Hilliard Lifeguard required.
- Possession of American Red Cross Lifeguarding/CPR/First Aid/AED certification.
- A background free of prior felony convictions.
- Valid State of Ohio motor vehicle driver’s license.
- Regular and punctual attendance is regarded as an essential requirement of this position.
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and some holidays.
- Lead Lifeguards are required to complete bi-weekly in-service training for the current season for which they are hired to maintain their skills.
