The City of Hillsboro is accepting complete applications and resumes to be a Lead Youth Recreation Instructor! This is a vital role in designing and delivering engaging recreational programs for youth during no school days, parents' night out events, youth camps, and general recreation classes. Your leadership will inspire participants to develop new skills, build friendships, and have fun! This position will be housed at Hidden Creek Community Center and is eligible to work 20 – 29 hours per week with benefits.

Current and Upcoming Projects:
This position will be the Lead Instructor coordinating the Camp Creek Summer Camp Program and will be expected to be on-site in the facility during Camp days. Camp Creek is scheduled to run from June 23, 2025 - August 14, 2025, from Monday - Thursday, 9 am - 4 pm.


Classification Description

Plans, organizes, and coordinates structured recreational classes and activities for participants of all ages; performs directly related work as required.

The principal function of an employee in this class is to plan, organize, and coordinate the implementation of structured recreational classes and activities. The work is performed under the supervision and direction of an assigned supervisor, but some leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgement and initiative. This class performs lead worker duties over assigned subordinate recreation personnel. This class is distinguished from the class of Recreation Instructor II by additional responsibility involved in recreational program planning and coordination. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain effective working relationships with the assigned supervisor, other City employees, program participants, and the general public. The principal duties of this class are performed in a recreational facility. This is a non-exempt position.

The Lead Youth Recreation Instructor position falls under the general Instructor III job classification.

  • Understanding of safety regulations, child development principles and behavior management techniques.
Responsibilities include:
  • Create and implement age-appropriate activities and lessons for a variety of youth programs including No School Day Programs, Youth Camps, and general Youth Recreation Classes.
  • Research, propose and develop new youth recreation programs.
  • Lead and supervise program participants, ensuring a safe, positive, and inclusive environment.
  • Work closely with other instructors and staff to coordinate programs and share best practices.
  • Maintain clear communication with parents and guardians regarding program details, schedules and participant needs.
  • Enforce safety protocols and program guidelines to ensure the well-being of all participants.
  • Collect feedback from participants and parents to continuously improve program offerings.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED; and
  • 3 years preferred experience in youth recreation, education, some experience in a child development, pre-school, or day care related field; or
  • Any combination of experience and training which provides the equivalent scope of knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.
  • Ability to attend work on a regular, predictable basis as scheduled.

Bilingual incentive pay available
Preference may be given to candidates who are bilingual in Spanish/English and bilingualism is our ideal as opportunities for community engagement abound. Employees who can demonstrate the ability to speak Spanish, or any language spoken by over ten percent (10%) of City residents as documented by the most recent U.S. Census, at a proficiency level determined by a fluency test administered by the City, will receive a monthly premium of three percent (3%) of their regular base pay.
