The City of Hillsboro is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Lead Youth Sports Instructor to guide our young athletes as they learn, grow, and play in a fun, safe, and supportive environment. In this role, you’ll be at the center of our mission to promote healthy living, teamwork, and positive values through sports. You will lead and oversee youth sports programs, working hands-on to teach fundamental skills, encourage sportsmanship, and create an inclusive space where every child feels valued and empowered. As a Lead Instructor, you’ll set the tone for our programs, ensuring that best practices in youth athletics are followed while making the experience enjoyable for participants. This position will be housed at Hidden Creek Community Center and is eligible to work 20 – 29 hours per week.
Classification Description
Plans, organizes, and coordinates structured recreational classes and activities for participants of all ages; performs directly related work as required.
The principal function of an employee in this class is to plan, organize, and coordinate the implementation of structured recreational classes and activities. The work is performed under the supervision and direction of an assigned supervisor, but some leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgement and initiative. This class performs lead worker duties over assigned subordinate recreation personnel. This class is distinguished from the class of Recreation Instructor II by additional responsibility involved in recreational program planning and coordination. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain effective working relationships with the assigned supervisor, other City employees, program participants, and the general public. The principal duties of this class are performed in a recreational facility. This is a non-exempt position.
Responsibilities include:
- Manage the planning, organization, and execution of youth basketball clinics and camps, including All Gender and Girls Basketball Programs, Adaptive Basketball Clinics, Youth Basketball Mini-Leagues and Youth Basketball Camps.
- Support development and coordination of a comprehensive Summer Youth Sports Camps series.
- Support coordination for Youth Volleyball Clinics, Youth and Teen Pickleball Classes, Youth Futsal Classes, Youth Tennis Classes.
- Support Sports & Recreation Supervisor with administrative tasks.
- Research, propose and develop new youth sports programs and events.
- Lead and supervise program participants, ensuring a safe, positive, and inclusive environment.
- Work closely with other instructors and staff to coordinate programs and share best practices.
- Maintain clear communication with parents and guardians regarding program details, schedules and participant needs.
Acceptable Experience and Training:
- Experience in coaching youth basketball programs, with a proven ability to teach fundamental skills and foster sportsmanship.
- Experience coaching or instructing multiple youth sports preferred.
- Strong understanding of age-appropriate coaching techniques, player development strategies, and best practices in youth athletics.
- Research, propose and develop new youth sports programs and events.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED; and
- Some experience in a child development, pre-school, or day care related field; or
- Any combination of experience and training which provides the equivalent scope of knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.
- Ability to attend work on a regular, predictable basis as scheduled.

Preference may be given to candidates who are bilingual in Spanish/English and bilingualism is our ideal as opportunities for community engagement abound. Employees who can demonstrate the ability to speak Spanish, or any language spoken by over ten percent (10%) of City residents as documented by the most recent U.S. Census, at a proficiency level determined by a fluency test administered by the City, will receive a monthly premium of three percent (3%) of their regular base pay.
