The principal function of an employee in this class is to perform journey level maintenance and/or operational activities of the City's traffic signals and roadway lighting systems. The work is performed under the supervision and direction of an assigned supervisor, but considerable leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgement and initiative. Responsibilities as assigned may include coordinating the work of lower level staff; troubleshooting problems; providing customer service; operating and maintaining complex instrumentation, equipment and/or testing equipment; compiling data and preparing regulatory reports; and, troubleshooting complex maintenance and operational problems. The principal duties of this class are performed indoor and outdoor environments with possible exposure to traffic, extreme height and extreme weather conditions.

• May serve as a lead worker to assigned personnel to include assigning, monitoring, reviewing and providing work direction. May provide input for hiring, participating in performance evaluations and disciplinary actions.
• Performs and/or coordinates preventative maintenance of traffic signals, flashing beacons, streetlights, specialized equipment, instruments, and/or systems.
• Maintains, monitors, troubleshoots, repairs, installs, programs, and/or calibrates equipment or systems of assigned area. Operates a variety of machinery, equipment and tools associated with repair, maintenance and testing of the City's traffic signals, flashing beacons, fiber optics and roadways lighting systems.
• Performs inspections of new construction for traffic signals, flashing beacons, streetlights and fiber optics.
• Performs underground utilities locating.
• Receives, reviews, prepares, processes or maintains various forms, reports, documents, reference materials, records, invoices, estimates and work orders.
• Responds to and resolves customer complaints or issues. Provides information related to support area. Interacts with vendors and evaluates service provided and/or actions to be taken.
• Monitors inventory levels; research supply requirements; ensures adequate resources; and initiates ordering of supplies to maintain inventory.
• Performs plan review, makes comments and approves the plans for construction.
• Provides input, and actively participates, in Department Operations Center planning and execution of emergency response duties during emergency events.
• Position will at times require work be performed during extended shifts, nighttime operations, weekends, and on call assignment and/or assistance.
• Position may involve travel for participation in organization events, as well as training opportunities.
• Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
High School Diploma or GED and 3 years of experience in maintenance and repair for working on traffic signals and street lighting systems; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above. Based on assignment, additional training may be required.
