DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Houston Health Department is looking for a Staff Epidemiologist to perform the following duties:
- Conduct cluster detection and response activities related to public health surveillance.
- Perform and assist in cluster analysis, including data gathering, processing, and interpretation.
- Support the development of processes, data systems, and policies to enhance cluster detection and response efforts.
- Identify and address gaps in programs and services revealed through cluster detection and analysis.
- Collaborate with the Bureau of HIV/STD and Viral Hepatitis Prevention and the Bureau of Epidemiology on cluster-related initiatives.
- Compile investigative findings into reports, ensuring accuracy and actionable insights.
- Work effectively with internal teams and external stakeholders to achieve program objectives.
- Utilize data analysis software (e.g., SAS) for epidemiological analysis and reporting.
- Create data visualizations using tools like Power BI to communicate findings effectively.
The position occasionally requires stooping or bending. Occasional very light lifting, such as three or four ream or papers or books (up to 20 pounds or an equivalent weight) may be required.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires a Master's degree in Epidemiology or Public Health with emphasis in Epidemiology or related biological, medical or public health fields.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
No experience is required.
Progressively responsible professional experience in public health or health care may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.

PREFERENCES
**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.**
Experience with data analysis in SAS preferred. Experience in data visualization, setting objectives and goals, and tracking progress toward measures preferred. Experience in building data collection tools and managing data is strongly preferred. Experience in public health surveillance, informatics, or epidemiology is preferred.
GENERAL INFORMATION

None. However, the Department may administer a skills assessment test.

Grants & Special funded positions are dependent upon continued available funds. If funding is no longer available, employee may be laid off or transferred. Factors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate's qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this classification.
