Job Summary
Assists in a variety of library departments which may vary according to organizational need. Assignments may include: assisting with Circulation activities, shelving and filing materials in proper order, shifting materials and reading collections for errors, assisting the public in scheduling and using computers, library software and other library equipment, assisting librarians, assisting with programs, and in the preparation and maintenance of the collections, assists in the acquisition of all materials and resources, and receives and distributes mail.
This part-time position must be available to work 10-19 hours per week, including Saturdays and evenings.
Job Scope
No supervisory or budgetary responsibilities.
Essential Job Functions
- Arrives at work on time and works assigned schedule, including evenings and Saturdays.
- Shelves and files materials in proper order. Shifts materials and reads collections for errors.
- Provides guidance to the public on locating materials and using library equipment, such as express self-check stations, microform readers, computers, and copy center equipment.
- Assists with special projects and programs as assigned.
- Keeps public areas neat. Checks out and clears materials.
- Assists in various Library departments as assigned.
- Adheres to Hurst’s Code of Ideals and The Hurst Way. Fosters positive employee relations and employee morale on a City-wide basis.
- Must be able to bend, stoop, walk, reach, push, pull, file at various heights and move up to 40 pounds.
- Performs related duties as directed when such duties are logical and appropriate
When Assigned to Circulation Additional Functions
- Issues Library cards, collects fines, and assists the public regarding circulation matters.
When Assigned to Computer Center Additional Functions
- Provides in-depth assistance in the Computer Center with patron technology needs.
When Assigned to Technical Services Additional Functions
- Assists in the processing of Library materials and related collection and database maintenance activities performed by the Technical Services unit.
- Performs custom covering, labeling, preparation and final inspection of materials for the public.
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
- Ability to work as a positive team member and in accordance with the city’s Code of Ideals.
- Broad base of general knowledge. Knowledge of internet tools and sources.
- Ability to work in a Microsoft Windows environment.
- Skill in keyboarding and accurate computer data entry.
- Skills in conflict resolution.
- Ability to work with Library automation systems.
- Ability to file alphanumerically using the Dewey Decimal Classification System (skills test may be given).
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions and maintain accurate records with attention to detail.
- Ability to learn and apply changing technologies and software.
- Ability to communicate effectively with the public, staff, and City personnel under busy, stressful conditions.
- Ability to operate required equipment, such as telephone, computer keyboard, copiers, printers, cash register, and related software.
- Ability to accurately count money & make change.
Minimum Education, Certification, and Experience Requirements
High school diploma or equivalent required. One-year related experience preferred. Bilingual English/Spanish Preferred.
