General Purpose
The City of Idaho Falls is currently accepting applications for Sanitation Relief Drivers. This position performs a variety of unskilled to semi-skilled heavy manual tasks and operation of collection vehicles for collection and disposal of City residential and commercial refuse. Works under the close supervision of a Truck Driver.
This position requires a valid Idaho CDL Class B (commercial driver's license).
Essential Functions
Follows an assigned route; picks up refuse containers and empties them into a sanitation packer; returns containers to a prescribed area.
Determines type of refuse not acceptable for placement in packer; gives notices condemning unacceptable trash containers.
Cleans refuse from alleys and picks up boxes and other refuse left within the City limits as designated; deposits refuse into a sanitation truck; picks up discarded Christmas trees, and operates chippers for mulching of same.
Acts as back up Truck Driver when needed; drives collection trucks through alleys and streets in business and residential section routes to collect garbage and refuse; properly disposes of garbage and refuse from loaded trucks at sanitary landfill or transfer station.
Operates sanitation packer on an assigned route on a rotational basis with other workers.
Trains less experienced personnel in sanitation operations.
Assist Truck Driver in maintenance and repair of sanitation equipment (i.e., greasing, changing tires, checking fluid levels, etc.).
Performs general maintenance on dumpsters; delivers dumpsters to customer locations.
Performs related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
No specific education required;
Six (6) months experience equivalent to a laborer.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Working knowledge of the sanitation collection processes and related routes; working knowledge of hazards and safety precautions; some knowledge of public relations.
Skill in the operation of trucks, forklift, chipper, loader, and various hand and power tools.
Ability to handle and use efficiently all the sanitation equipment; ability to perform strenuous manual labor; ability to follow verbal and written instructions; ability to communicate effectively; ability to supervise collection crew and drive vehicle in absence of Truck Driver.
Special Qualifications:
Must possess a valid Idaho CDL Class B (commercial driver's license).
Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit for extended periods of time performing in varying environmental conditions requiring exposure to all climatic seasons. The employee is frequently required to move or lift up to 50 pounds. Generally, tasks require a variety of physical activities, generally involving muscular strain, related to walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, lifting. Talking, hearing and seeing essential to performing required job functions. Regular exposure to heavy traffic, fumes and airborne particles. Common eye, hand, finger dexterity exist. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, discriminating thinking and creative problem solving.
