What are the responsibilities and job description for the IPL Meter Reading - Utility Meter Reader B position at City of Independence?
Reads electric and water consumption meters on various assigned routes. Locates and uncovers meters as necessary; uses keys to enter private property. Records consumption by entering meter readings into hand-held computers. Inspects meters and connections for defects, irregularities, malfunctions, tampering and/or unauthorized connections; reports meter defects, hazards, or related findings to proper authority by completing required work orders for service or customer service notices. Assists in re-reading meters to check the accuracy of earlier readings. Restructures routes to read meters in sequence. Resolves and/or refers public inquiries and complaints. Properly cares for all tools, materials, and equipment. Performs related duties.
Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent. Must possess a valid driver’s license, provide own transportation, and furnish proof of required insurance coverage. Must complete required NIMS level training within first six months of hire.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Ability to perform simple arithmetic calculations quickly and accurately; operate meter reading and mobile radio equipment; read and interpret street maps and valve plot books. Must be able to understand and communicate policies, procedures, and services, referring customers to other information sources as required. Ability to handle customer contacts with courtesy and respect for the customer and the customer’s property.
Physical Demands: Ability to traverse meter routes on foot for long periods of time. Continued kneeling, stooping, and crouching to read meters located in meter wells and pits. Ability to climb in and out of confined spaces. Ability to bend and lift 75 lbs. plus or minus 25 lbs. Vision sufficient to read meters from distances of 3 to 10 feet away.
Typical Working Conditions: Outdoor conditions of extreme heat and cold and varying weather. Contact with Others: Extensive contact with customers where explanatory or interpretive information is exchanged, gathered, or presented.
