What are the responsibilities and job description for the IPL System Operations - SYSTEM OPERATIONS MANAGER position at City of Independence?
Current opening is in the System Operations Division of the Power & Light Department. Manages and oversees the day-to-day real-time operations of the Power & Light electric power system; coordinates operations functions with adjacent utilities as an integral part of the regional transmission organization. Interfaces with other Power & Light Division staff to assure seamless and economical operation of the electric system. Supervises and coordinates NERC Reliability and Critical Infrastructure functions. Carries out supervisory responsibility in accordance with policies, procedures and applicable laws including: interviewing, hiring and training, planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Prepares and administers budget for system operations division; submits requests for new materials and supplies and checks budget to be sure funds are available. Supervises emergency operation of the power transmission system and generation. Provides technical review of engineering studies and designs related to system operations and maintenance. Supervises hardware and software maintenance of the SCADA system. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from a four-year college or university in electrical engineering. Ten or more years of progressively responsible related experience; or any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job. Must possess a valid driver’s license. Professional Engineer Certificate preferred. Must pass a Security Background Check. Must complete required NIMS level training within first six months of hire. Knowledge of design, engineering and operation of electric power systems; regional Transmission Organization’s Market structures and mechanisms; computer usage and applications related to work; electrical construction standards and practices; NERC Reliability and CIP Standards; National Electrical Safety Code; applicable state, federal and local laws, rules and regulations; planning, organizing, assigning, directing, reviewing and evaluating the work of staff; good mathematical skills; communicating clearly and effectively, orally and in writing;
Typical Working Conditions: Typically quiet working conditions. The position will require work beyond normal working hours and will be subject to on-call status.
