Do you want to be part of a growing community? The Indianola Fire Department is currently hiring Career Firefighters/Paramedics!

The City of Indianola (pop. 16,069) is a growing community with a historic downtown, located approximately 15 minutes south of Des Moines. It is a safe community with Midwestern values, friendly people and excellent schools. Indianola, which is home to Simpson College, the world-renowned Des Moines Metro Opera and the National Balloon Museum and U.S. Ballooning Hall of Fame, is known for its excellent access to outdoor activities, a nice trail system, five major parks and two golf courses. The community welcomes thousands of visitors annually who come to Indianola to enjoy major events such as the National Balloon Classic, the Warren County Fair and other events.

Applications are being accepted that will establish a Civil Service eligibility list for full-time Firefighter/Paramedics. The City intends to establish this list for current openings and openings that may occur within the next four (4) months.

This position is responsible for a number of tasks, including, but not limited to:

  • Protect life, property and environment from fire.
  • Provide specialized rescue and emergency medical services to the community.
  • Contain and control the accidental or intentional release of hazardous materials.
  • Perform fire code compliance inspections (company level) and deliver community education programs.
  • Operate and perform general maintenance on specialized fire apparatus and equipment.
  • Maintain and improve skills by participating in drills and training sessions.
  • The cleaning and maintenance of fire department facilities is an integral part of daily duties.
  • All personnel will work within the Incident Command System and a para-military structure.

The successful candidate will have:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Full-time employees hired after August 3, 1998, must possess, and maintain Emergency Medical Technician paramedic-level certification recognized by the State of Iowa and a Class B, CDL driver's license for the duration of their career unless released from these requirements by the Chief of the Department.
  • Must be a certified Emergency Medical Technician to submit application, Paramedic-level preferred.
  • Possession and maintenance of the appropriate Emergency Medical Technician certification, Paramedic-level, Firefighter I and Firefighter II certification, and a Class B, CDL driver's license are conditions of continued employment. Possession of hazardous materials technician level and fire inspector I, will remain conditions of employment throughout their career. Failure to obtain and maintain required license and certifications subject the employee to immediate termination.
  • Newly hired employees who are not certified to the required certification levels will have 20-months from hire date to acquire the necessary certifications. Employees who fail to obtain the appropriate certifications will be immediately dismissed from employment.
  • A valid driver's license and good driving record.
  • Subject to a post-offer physical, physical capacity test, drug and alcohol screening, and background check.

The starting salary of non-paramedic-certified full-time employees is $30.79/hour ($64,050.00 annually). Once the paramedic certification is successfully obtained and it is recognized by the State of Iowa, they will move to the paramedic-certified salary as determined by department policy.

The starting salary for paramedic-certified full-time employees is $32.33/hour ($67,252.50 annually).

Written and physical ability evaluations are required for this position. Information packets shall be emailed to qualified candidates explaining the written and physical fitness evaluation process and applicable dates for completing each process. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a post-offer drug screening, physical capacity profile, treadmill test, and physical and background check. The position will close on Friday, February 28, 2025.
