The hiring range for this position is $31.86/hr. to $33.70/hr., depending on qualifications. Position requires some evening and weekend hours. The Fitness Specialist is responsible for assisting in managing and carrying-out the day-to-day functions of the fitness center and programs at the Veterans Memorial Community Center. Duties include assisting in planning and monitoring fitness offerings, hiring, scheduling and giving job direction to fitness staff, updating marketing materials, and managing fitness instruction.
The Fitness Specialist must have a positive attitude and ability to work collaboratively with other VMCC employees in a team-based environment.•Position assists the Fitness Program Supervisor with overseeing the fitness offerings of the Parks & Recreation Department and serves as a back-up in the absence of the Supervisor.
o Assists with administering the fitness programs for members at Veterans Memorial Community Center and the IGH Community.
o Assists with managing registration and resolving participant concerns or questions regarding fitness classes and programs.
o Assists in identifying needs for fitness classes and events, reserves class space and ensures appropriate equipment is coordinated for each class or event.
o Assists with measuring and evaluating progress to monitor the impact of fitness programming goals.
o Attends community events to promote the City’s fitness programs and activities.
o Assists with maintaining fitness program files, records and databases.
•Assists with overseeing the Fitness Center and programming at the Veterans Memorial Community Center, including:
o Provides input on guidelines, rules and procedures for the fitness center and its operation.
o Assists with monitoring and supervising the use of the fitness center and its equipment.
o Serves as an instructor for fitness programs as needed.
o Assists with monitoring staff schedules, approving sub requests, and covering shifts as necessary.
o Assists with recruiting and training fitness staff.
o Assists with coaching and mentoring staff to ensure compliance with procedures, shares feedback with Fitness Program Supervisor.
o Assists with inputting training and certification records.
o Assists with ensuring staff have the necessary information to complete work, e.g. class/rosters and schedules.
o Assists as needed to update program and registration information for brochures or other marketing materials (e.g., flyers, direct mailings, newsletters, educational brochures, and social media).
o Performs customer/client relation duties.
•Represents the city in a professional and positive manner through correspondence, events, and programs.
•Keeps the Fitness Program Supervisor informed of significant issues or challenges impacting areas of responsibility.
•Performs other duties of a comparable level or type, as apparent or assigned.•Two years of experience in the field of fitness; or an equivalent combination of education and experience to perform the essential functions of the position.
•Red Cross CPR/First Aid/AED Certification (or successfully obtain within the first 12 months of employment).
•Group Fitness Instructor Certification from a nationally recognized organization (e.g. American Council on Exercise (ACE), Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFFA) or National Exercise Trainers Association NETA), (or successfully obtain within the first 12 months of employment).Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
•Knowledge of human anatomy, kinesiology and training principles.
•Knowledge of group fitness teaching strategies, principles and practices and ability to directly deliver fitness instruction and personal training.
•Knowledge of diet, nutrition, exercise, and health issues and trends.
•Knowledge of customer and client relation fundamentals and practices.
•Knowledge of safety guidelines related to the field of personal fitness and fitness center operations.
•Knowledge of scheduling and coordinating staffing and use of fitness center.
•Ability to manage multiple tasks and programming.
•Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
•Ability to work both independently and as an effective member of a team.
•Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with program participants, Community Center staff, outside agencies and the general public.
•Ability to operate and use common office equipment, computers and general business productivity software/applications.
Work Environment
Work is generally performed in a moderately noisy location. Duties include physical requirements associated with the movement/assembly of fitness equipment, demonstrating and teaching fitness classes.
Occasional exposure to wet, humid (non-weather) conditions when providing fitness instruction in the pool; risk of falls on wet pool decks.
Position requires some evening and weekend hours.
