Jacksonville Recreation has indoor and outdoor facilities throughout the City and include year-round programs, classes and events including summer concerts, camps, movies, team sports and many more activities for all ages. We are a waterway City with easy access to fishing and water sports and are close to Onslow beaches.General Description: The City of Jacksonville is looking for an energetic individual to perform basic semi-skilled, technical and responsible work in conducting aquatic safety, lifesaving and first aid techniques, at City operated pools; does related work as required. Manages the daily operations of the City's swim lesson program. Trains, coordinates and directs swim instructors to teach swim lessons to students in accordance with the City's standard for swim lessons. Ensuring the safety of the students at all times. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the City Wide Services Supervisor. Supervision is exercised over Swim Instructors.
The salary posted is the full hourly range for this position. The starting hourly rate is expected to be in the range of $15.27- $19.85 depending on qualifications.
Supervising, Coordinating, observing, maintaining, enforcing and supervising aquatic center swimming, activities, and program rules. Preparing reports and records. - Supervise swim instructors.
- Maintains records as required by the Recreation Department.
- Ensures a safe environment for the students of the City’s swim lesson program.
- Assists Recreation Coordinator in planning, development, scheduling, registration, promotion, and instruction of the swim lesson program.
- Ensures that all policies, rules, and regulations are observed and that no safety hazard is created.
- Maintains all swim lesson equipment.
- Coordinates and teaches swim lessons to students in accordance with the City's swim lesson guidelines.
- Discusses student's progress with parents.
- Plans and conducts scheduled in-service training.
- Instructs all lessons with safety and the students' self-esteem foremost in mind.
- Properly utilizes emergency procedures and equipment.
- Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.
Thorough knowledge of the first aid and CPR techniques; thorough knowledge lifesaving
techniques; thorough knowledge of the proper usage of emergency water safety equipment;
Basic knowledge of City policies; ability to swim 300 yards, tread water for 2 minutes without
use of arms, and retrieve a brick from 9’ depth; ability to do fitness swimming regularly; ability
to enforce pool safety rules with firmness and impartiality; ability to meet and deal tactfully with
the public. Must possess knowledge of effective teaching techniques, safety standards,
communication and public relations skills, the ability to be vocally assertive with a strong voice. Ability to work in outdoor environment with exposure to heat and sun; ability to swim and lift, push and pull to rescue children and adults; ability to hear cries for assistance, splashing and sounds from a distance of 50 yards; ability to see area of responsibility and read charts,
thermometers, gauges and reports.
