In this pivotal role within the Department of Public Works – Engineering team, you will be responsible for:
- Preparing and reviewing plans, surveys, and bid documents related to sewer and water projects, storm sewer, streets, traffic control, signs, pavement markings, and special public works projects.
- Coordinating, preparing, and reviewing the development of engineering plans, specifications, and cost estimates for public improvement projects.
- Overseeing various construction projects.. This will include scheduling projects, coordinating daily activities, ensuring compliance with plans and specifications, and inspecting work in progress.
- Conducting feasibility and cost studies, then recommending alternative approaches when necessary.
- Consulting with members of other departments regarding departmental or City-wide requirements and solutions.

What qualifications are necessary for the role?
To be successful and well prepared for this position, the minimum education and experience required includes:
- A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, environmental engineering, biological systems engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum of six (6) months of professional engineering experience.
- A valid, state-issued driver’s license at time of hire is required

- If you’re graduating with a relevant bachelor’s degree in Spring 2025, you may still qualify.
- A combination of equivalent experience and/or education as determined by the Human Resources Office may be considered in lieu of minimum requirements.
What is the typical schedule?
Typically, you will work Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week. However, at times, this position is expected to work additional hours to ensure projects and critical work assignments are completed.
What is the pay?
The starting annual salary for this position is $66,153 ($31.80 per hour); this is an exempt position. This position is also eligible for annual economic adjustments and performance-based adjustments, as approved by the City Council.

- Floating Holidays: You will receive a prorated amount of 3 days – based upon the number of full months worked to year end. On January 1 of the following year, you will receive the full 3 days.
- Exempt Days: As an exempt employee, you have the potential to earn up to 3 extra days off per year, subject to City Manager approval.
- Holidays: CoJ is closed for eight (8) holidays each year.
- Sick: You will earn 8 hours of sick time each full month worked.

When factoring in the benefits alongside your annual salary, the overall compensation rate could range from $79,748 to $94,486 per year, contingent upon the selected benefits and coverage types.
Furthermore, the City of Janesville strives to ease the transition between employers by minimizing the stress associated with gaps in insurance coverage. For new hires before the 15th of the month, medical, dental, and vision insurance become effective on the date of hire. For those hired on or after the 15th of the month, these benefits kick in on the 1st of the following month.
