OBJECTIVE:
Under the general supervision of the Head Guard/Aquatics Supervisor and guidance from the Recreation Programmer, the Swim Lesson Instructor leads the instruction of various levels within the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim program 2-4 days per week (day and/or evening).
RELATIONSHIPS:
Reports to: Head Lifeguard/Aquatics Supervisor and/or Aquatics Supervisor; Recreation Programmer
Has work contact with appointed and elected City officials, Department, Division, and Office Heads, City employees, and the general public.
Supervises: Has no regular supervisory duties.

Swim lessons are in the mornings and/or evenings during the week outdoors at Rockport Pool. Morning lessons are Monday-Thursday and Evening Lessons are Tuesday and Thursday.  Additional swim lesson hours at Palmer Pool are forthcoming.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   1. Understands and teach proper swim instruction for levels Parent/Tot through Level 6 of the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim curriculum.
  2. Prepares Block and Lesson plans according to American Red Cross curriculum.
  3. Evaluates participant progress and determine whether participants have met the established requirements for each swim lesson level.
  4. Safely executes lesson plans using the appropriate pool equipment or materials for the level being taught. 
  5. Scans and surveys the pool for potential safety concerns. In addition, continuously evaluate the safety of your class and act as appropriate. 
  6. Communicates with parents/guardians about their child’s progress and/or need to switch levels. 
  7. Provides written documentation to participant’s parent or guardian regarding skills met or not met and/or swim lesson achievement met if applicable.
  8. Follows all safety regulations, policies, and procedures; reports all unsafe conditions and acts to supervisor; reports all accidents to the supervisor immediately whenever possible; follows recognized safe work practices.
  9. Performs other special projects and other job duties as assigned or required during regular and non-business hours.
  10. All employees may be assigned by the City Manager or their designee to perform duties and assume responsibilities that are outside the scope of their work duties when the City Manager has declared a City disaster or the City Emergency Operations Center has been initiated.
OTHER DUTIES:
  1. Takes and records daily class attendance. 
  2. Provides polite customer service to all class participants.
  3. Enforces aquatics facility policies, rules, and regulations.
  4. Attends mandatory staff and facility trainings. 
  5. Performs other related duties as assigned.
The requirements listed below are necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
  1. Must be 16 years of age or older. (15 if an Assistant Instructor)
  2. CPR, First Aid, and AED certification required or be willing to obtain.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
The qualifications listed below are preferred, but not required to perform the essential duties of the position. The absence of these qualifications on a candidate’s application does not preclude them from consideration.
  1. Prior experience teaching lessons and Lifeguard and WSI certification preferred
A combination of equivalent experience and/or education as determined by the Human Resources Office may be considered in lieu of minimum requirements.

  1. Working knowledge of the fundamentals of swimming skills, including the front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, sidestroke, and butterfly.
Skills: 
  1. Teach the fundamentals of swimming skills according to American Red Cross lesson plans.
  2. Organizational and time management skills to prioritize duties and accomplish a high volume of work product while adapting to constant changes in priority.
  3. Exceptional communication skills, paired with a strong customer service background, and effective interpersonal skills.
  4. Collaboration skills to effectively work with others to achieve common goals through communication, teamwork, and problem-solving.
Abilities: 
  1. Ability to work mornings and evenings per lesson plan schedule.
  2. Ability to compose routine correspondence and routine reports in a clear, concise, logical, and effective manner, utilizing proper grammar, spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, and tone.
  3. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, adapt to changing priorities, and to work smoothly and cooperatively on a variety of projects.
  4. Ability to make decisions according to applicable laws, regulations, established procedures, and the directives of the City Manager and City Council.
  5. Ability to learn and apply new technology and computerized systems/building systems in order to detect and diagnose operational problems and maintenance needs.
  6. Ability to comply with all safety policies, practices, and procedures, and report all unsafe activities or conditions to supervisor.

EQUIPMENT, INSTRUMENTS, AND MACHINES:
Equipment used includes various teaching tools including, but not limited to pool noodles, kickboards, and other toys.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL FACTORS:

1.   Must have the physical ability to lead and instruct program lessons.
2.   Work will take place in an outdoor environment and varying types of weather, including
      possibility of high heat and humidity, and cold air and chilly water. 
3.   Working conditions involve occasional exposure to dirt, dust, and moisture.
4.   Perform basic instruction to program activities, which may include, but not limited to: 
      Semi-reaching to full-reach overhead, crouching, kneeling, bending, twisting, turning, 
      and lying on stomach and/or back.   
5.   Must be able to sit or stand and move for long periods of time.
6.   See and observe all sections of an assigned area of responsibility, with or without   
      reasonable accommodation.
