OBJECTIVE:
Under general supervision and guidance of the Recreation Programmer, Recreation Supervisor, Recreation Director and Tech Services, the Aquatic Maintenance Technician is responsible for cleaning, maintaining, and performing preventive maintenance on Rockport and Palmer swimming pools in accordance with state and local health codes and support equipment to ensure safety and sanitary conditions.
Preferred schedule includes early mornings on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, as well as Saturday and/or Sunday, for approximately 3-4 hours per day, totaling around 20 hours per week from mid-May until end of summer.
RELATIONSHIPS:
Reports to: Recreation Programmer

Works with other departments regularly such as Parks and Tech Services. Also works with seasonal employees on a regular basis. Will also work with contracted vendors as needed.

Essential Duties

  • Cleans and maintains swimming pool in a safe and sanitary condition, including using manual and automatic vacuum equipment, scrubbing the pool wall and floors, and skimming leaves and debris from water’ s surface.
  • Checks and performs preventative maintenance on pumps, chlorinators, heating and filtration equipment to maintain operative condition.
  • Empties skimmer and pump baskets to maintain proper filtration. Cleans filters regularly.
  • Adds chemicals (chlorine, etc.) to hoppers as needed.
  • Conducts chemical tests of water and records on log. Troubleshoots when an imbalance occurs to restore proper chemical levels and clarity of water.
  • Performs routine and required backwashing of pool filtration systems.
  • Orders chemicals and supplies as needed.
  • Performs general maintenance and custodial tasks as requested.
  • Takes and keeps accurate records of water quality following state and local procedures. Keeps accurate records from each season start-up and shut down.
  • Performs proper Start Up and Winterization procedures along with Tech Services.
OTHER DUTIES:
  • Provides training and technical assistance to other staff in areas of expertise.
  • Reports any issues with the pool, equipment or water quality to supervisor.

Minimum Position Requirements/Qualifications

Minimum education and experience required to perform essential duties of the position.
Education, Certifications and Experience:

  • High school diploma, or GED.
  • Commercial pool maintenance experience and building maintenance experience, or any combination of education and experience which would provide the desired skills, knowledge and ability to perform the job.
  • Certified Pool Operator (CPO) preferred or Aquatics Facility Operator (AFO) certified or ability to obtain within one month of hire and maintain.
  • First Aid and CPR/AED certified or ability to obtain within one month of hire.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Wisconsin Driver’s License.
Knowledge of:
  • State and local health codes pertaining to public pools

EQUIPMENT, INSTRUMENTS AND MACHINES:
Equipment used includes, but not limited to specialized water testing equipment, automatic and manual pool vacuums, hand tools, and power tools
PHYSICAL FACTORS:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by any an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Must have the physical ability to respond appropriately in emergency situations.
  • Work will take place in an outdoor environment and varying types of weather, including possibility of high heat and humidity and cold air.
  • Working conditions involve occasional exposure to dirt, dust, and moisture.
  • Exposure to hazardous or toxic chemicals. Must utilize appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Perform various activities, which may include, but not limited to:
Semi-reaching to full-reach overhead, crouching, kneeling, bending, twisting, turning, and lying on stomach and/or back.
