Description

The City of Jefferson is currently accepting applications for a Day Camp Program Assistant Manager . This position works under the direct supervision of the Program Manager and is responsible for the following camps : Camp Wokka Wokka, Camp Greenberry, Camp Out N About, Binder Adventure Camp and Washington Park Day Camp.

Examples of Duties

Assisting with recruiting, hiring and scheduling day camp leaders and counselors.

Assist with planning, organizing and supervising the operation of all camp and camp related activities.

Assist with training, directing, supervising and evaluating counselors and volunteers, including planning orientation and in-service training.

Write camp reports and periodic evaluations of staff and the program based on observations, discussions by supervisors, campers and staff, and conferences. This includes keeping up-to-date records of attendance, inventory, employee hours, and other administrative matters as outlined by the Recreation Supervisor.

Assist camp leaders in administering the budget and business operations where necessary, including materials and supplies purchasing, equipment recommendations and other fiscal matters.

Help camp leaders develop and carry out effective relationships with campers, parents and staff by creating an atmosphere in which all involved understand and are committed to the goals and objectives of the program.

Support camp leaders by handling all grievances and / or discipline cases involving campers and staff and report them to the Supervisor immediately.

Responsible for the safety, welfare, education and recreational needs of the campers including a thorough familiarity of the Department's Emergency and Crisis Plan.

Project a positive image to the public by representing the Parks and Recreation Department in a professional manner and assist in the promotion of their programs and facilities.

Develop and maintain a practice of stewardship for park property and camp supplies including proper accounting and storage of all camp equipment.

Binder Adventure Camp is geared for children in grades 4-7. Some of the activities include canoeing, fishing, archery, outdoor camping / cooking, confidence course, hiking, nature study and much more, held at Binder Park.

Camp Out & About is geared for children entering grades 1-6. Activities will include but are not limited to basketball, flag football, soccer, golf, dodge ball, field trips, crafts, and nutrition information, held at Ellis Porter Park.

Camp Wokka Wokka is geared for children entering grades K-3. Activities include arts and crafts, games and physical activities, cookouts, hikes, nature study, field trips and much more, held at Memorial Park.

Camp Greenberry is geared for children in grades 1-5. Activities focus on natural sciences themes, conservation, environmental education as well as camp games and crafts and more. Camp will be held at Greenberry Park.

Washington Park Day Camp is geared towards children entering grades 1-6. This camp will include a variety of physical activities as well as built in skating lessons. This camp is held at the Washington Park Ice Arena.

Typical Qualifications

Must have at least one summer experience as a Camp Leader for JC Parks.

Must have a valid Missouri Drivers' License and reliable transportation.

Applicants should be at least 18 years of age, 21 years or older preferred.

Requires a high school diploma and experience in a program involving leadership in outdoor recreational activities, sports, education or specials education similar to those found in an organized playground or camp program. A degree in Recreation or a closely related field preferred.

A thorough experience and understanding of outdoor recreation, education, therapeutic recreation,special education and conservation or nature study program is preferred.

Physical : Ability to work in extreme weather conditions; lift, carry and transport equipment weighing up to 50 pounds; sit at a computer for extended periods; and participate in various departmental sponsored public / sports events.

Mental : Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships; respond to complaints and manage crisis situations in a calm, professional and expedient manner; supervise, motivate seasonal staff and work in excess of eight hours a day during peak seasons.

Supplemental Information

This position will work daytime hours Monday-Friday and hours are approximately 7 : 15 am to 2 : 45 pm. during the summer months.

This position may work a flexible schedule during the winter and spring months in preparation for the Summer Camp season depending on the availability of the candidate.
