The City of Johnson City, Tennessee is currently accepting applications for a Cross Connection Coordinator with the Water & Sewer department. The employee performs intermediate professional work coordinating and updating the database which includes the backflow prevention and the grease trap program inspections. This position will include field work and continuous performance review. Superior communication skills and tactful customer interaction is required. Investigating and developing new program accounts and operations; does related work as required. This is technical and skilled work in the oversight and performance evaluation of inspections for Backflow Prevention, wells, and Fats, Oil and Grease (FOG) Programs. General planning, oversight and performance is provided to subordinate employees. The work can be reviewed by a technical superior through review of records and reports, inspections, program reporting, metrics, and periodic supervision.
Essential Functions of Position:
- locates and inspects residential, commercial, and industrial facilities, backflow prevention devices, wells, and grease traps for compliance with local and state regulations;
- maintains testing equipment in a clean and working condition;
- prepares records for review as needed by regulatory agencies;
- performs daily record keeping and correspondence;
- good communication and interpersonal skills;
- ensures that field safety precautions at sites are performed;
- orders equipment program activities;
- supervises the cross connection and FOG programs and associated personnel;
- keeps current records of professional developments in the field;
- provides research for development of various safety programs;
- maintains up-to-date inventory of new locations of facilities requiring program inspections;
- maintains data base of potable water customers with abandoned wells;
- performs related tasks as required
Required Knowledge, Skills and Training: Thorough knowledge of chemical, biological, and hydraulic parameters of water and wastewater systems; thorough knowledge of EPA, State and local regulations; ability to communicate well with the general public. Extended periods of sitting/standing at a workstation or desk. Manual dexterity to work efficiently on a computer terminal for data entry. Ability to speak clearly.
Acceptable Experience and Training: A college degree in environmental health or management with considerable experience in cross-connection and FOG inspections. Having any equivalent combination of experience and educational training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities is preferred. Possession of a State of Tennessee Certificate of Competency in Testing and Evaluating Backflow Preventers. Pre-employment physical, and background check required.
