Description

Starting Salary $84,780.80

Performs complex skilled technical and administrative work supervising the construction and maintenance of the electric distribution lines and related installations, and related work as required. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Electric System Superintendent. Full supervision is exercised over line construction and maintenance crews.

Essential Functions

  • Plans, organizes and directs the work of line construction and maintenance crews.
  • Supervises the construction and maintenance of transmission and distribution lines, street light circuits and traffic signals.
  • Reviews service and work orders.
  • Verifies job briefings.
  • Writes and / or approves switching orders.
  • Routes paper work to appropriate divisions and department.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of department budget.
  • Prepares time and work records.
  • Prepares periodic reports.
  • Assists in the recruitment and selection process; recommends candidates for hire; recommends salary increases, disciplinary actions and terminations.
  • Reviews electrical plans; requests price quotes from vendors; prepares estimates; requests material from warehouse stock; layout job fro line crews; assigns daily work.
  • Teaches portions of the Lineman Career Development Program; assist in teaching pole climbing; serves on various committees; maintains training files on employees.
  • Investigates customer complaints and recommends remedial actions.
  • Checks distribution system and determines future needs; determines need for and verifies tree trimming activities.
  • Troubleshoot overhead and underground lines; participates in power restoration activities during outages.
  • Coordinates out of town crews during storm outages.
  • Maintains database on poles, transformers, street lights and work orders; ships defective transformers for disposal; ensures rubber protective gloves are in test date.'
  • Performs related tasks as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma of GED with coursework in electrical engineering, or related field and extensive experience construction and repair of electrical systems, including considerable supervisory experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Completion of Lineman Career Development Program at Journeyman level.
  • Completion of state approved Powerline Technician Certification program.
  • Possession of first aid and CPR certifications.
  • Thorough knowledge of the practices, methods, equipment and tools used in electric in the installation, maintenance and repair of electric power lines.
  • Thorough knowledge of the electrical system, facilities and areas served.
  • Ability to plan and supervise the work of subordinate personnel.
  • Ability to perform all work as required to train subordinate mechanics or perform emergency service.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex designs and specifications related to electrical service.
  • Ability to communicate ideas in both oral and written formats.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain reports and records.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations ships with associates, contractors, engineers and the general public.
  • Must possess a CDL A driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina.
  • Physical Demands

    This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently walking and speaking or hearing and occasionally requires climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arms length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock and exposure to vibrations; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. heavy traffic, large earth-moving equipment).
