What are the responsibilities and job description for the Smart Grid Technician position at City of Kinston?
Performs intermediate semiskilled work installing, troubleshooting, servicing and disconnecting electric and water distribution services, and related work as required. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Support Services Coordinator. Regular, reliable attendance is an essential function of this position.
Testing, repairing, installing and maintaining smart electric and water meters and maintaining records.
- Troubleshoots and repairs problems with electric and water meters, change out communications device, programming issues and demand registers; changes out meters when required.
- Pressure test water lines.
- Reprograms, repairs, tests and cleans meters that are returned to meter shop; ensures meters are ready for reuse.
- Checks to see that meters are correctly installed and functioning properly.
- Enters data into smart grid/billing software including electric/water meter numbers and communication device numbers.
- Verifies accuracy of information put into billing inventory system in regard to meter numbers, communications device and multiplier.
- Disconnects meters for non-payment; reinstates service upon payment.
- Receives and responds to customer inquiries and complaints.
- Maintains vehicle records, ensuring safety compliance.
- Assists in training new meter personnel.
- Maintains on-call status as required.
- Performs related tasks as required.
- High School diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum 1 year experience preferred.
- General knowledge of the use of computers and the ability to learn smart grid/billing software.
- General knowledge of basic plumbing and electrical skills.
- General knowledge of the methods and procedures involved in the reading of meters and recording consumption.
- General knowledge of the geography and street locations of the city.
- Ability to use automated consumption recording device.
- Ability to write legibly.
- Ability to make simple arithmetical calculations rapidly and accurately.
- Ability to walk for continuous periods under varying climatic conditions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license in the state of North Carolina.
