Job Summary
The City of Kodiak is seeking a temporary Phlebotomist to work on an as-needed basis. This position involves collecting blood samples from individuals in the care or custody of law enforcement at the Kodiak Community Jail or other secure locations.
Key Responsibilities
- Explaining blood draw procedures to individuals and answering their questions.
- Preparing individuals before drawing blood.
- FOLLOWING PROPER INFECTION CONTROL PROCEDURES BEFORE DRAWING BLOOD.
- Observing adherence to OSHA regulations.
- Maintaining sanitary work areas.
- Gathering medical testing materials.
- Drawing blood and applying bandages.
- Verifying individual's information and labeling blood samples.
- Properly disposing of contaminated supplies.
- Submitting labeled blood samples to the Police Officer.
Requirements
- A High school diploma or GED, along with a post-secondary accredited phlebotomy program, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Professional certification in phlebotomy from a recognized program.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Principles and techniques of phlebotomy.
- Medical terminology.
- OSHA standards and medical laws and ethics.
- Proper infection control procedures.
- Proficient English usage.
- Legal requirements for drawing blood and handling fluid samples.
Physical Requirements
This position requires sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a correctional setting, including standing, walking, finger dexterity, grasping, lifting, bending, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.
Working Conditions
Work will be performed in a correctional setting, with occasional exposure to intoxicated and disagreeable people under extreme stress. The position is on-call, requiring non-standard work hours and a response time of 25 minutes.
