The City of Kodiak is recruiting for a temporary (on call basis) Phlebotomist. Position includes responsibilities of collecting blood from individuals who are in the care or custody of law enforcement at the Kodiak Community Jail or other secure location. Samples are collected for evidentiary purposes in accordance with department procedures.The Police Department provides quality law enforcement services to the community and assistance to citizens who request services that may be related to the well-being of life, health, and property. The Phlebotomist is responsible for performing duties in an efficient and effective manner and is required to make independent and sound judgments. The Phlebotomist must perform these duties in a manner that reflects positively on the City and the department.*Temporary position that works on an as needed basis.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Explaining blood draw procedures to individuals in custody and answering any questions about the process.Preparing individuals before drawing blood.Following proper infection control procedures before drawing blood.Observes adherence to rules and regulations mandated by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).Following all health and safety protocols and procedures to maintain sanitary work areas.Gathering medical testing materials, including needles, sample vials, blood storage bags and test tubes.Drawing blood and applying bandages after blood is drawn.Verifying individual’s information and labeling blood samples properly.Properly disposes of contaminated supplies.Submit properly labeled blood samples to the Police Officer.Performs other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Positions in this class typically require: reaching, standing, walking, finger dexterity, grasping, lifting, bending, reaching, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. Functions of this position require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a correctional setting; to stand or sit for periods of time; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.Light Work: Exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.WORKING CONDITIONS: Majority of work is performed in a correctional setting, with occasional exposure to dangerous intoxicated and/or disagreeable people under extreme stress. Work environment can have periods of high stress where control must be maintained. Position is on-call where non-standard work hours are required.
