What are the responsibilities and job description for the Head Camp Counselor - 2025 Summer Camp position at City of Kyle?
Kyle 2025 Summer Camp will be a 9-week camp from May 27th until August 1st, 2025, Monday – Friday 7:30 am – 5:45 pm. The camp allows the ages of entering 1st grade to entering 9th grade. The Kyle Camp is an indoor and outdoor camp filled with tons of impressive active activities, water games, and crafts.
- Assist the Assistant Camp Director/Recreation Coordinator in planning, coordinating and supervising programs and activities for the Day Camp Program, ensuring counselors have needed materials, equipment and understanding of instructions.
- Proper implementation of safety protocol and procedures always including but not limited to all City of Kyle Facilities and off-site field trips.
- Must be able to get into a pool to supervise and monitor campers and camp staff at least 2 times a week.
- Ensure that Counselors are following schedules and completing planned activities.
- Assist with staff coordination and supervision in the absence of Recreation Coordinator and Assistant Camp Director.
- Provide directions for camp counselors and ensure compliance with required policies, procedures and regulations, and report noncompliance to supervisor.
- Attend and assist in facilitating all required meetings, training, and in-services brought forth by the Recreation Manager & Recreation Coordinator.
- Maintain positive interpersonal relations among everyone involved in the Camp program including children, parents, Recreation Coordinator, Assistant Camp Director, and other camp counselors.
- Be available for camp counselors in times of emergencies.
- Always oversee the enforcement of camp rules & regulations.
- Proper documentation and reporting of issues to supervisors.
- Assist counselors in dealing with behavioral issues and group management.
- Ensure counselors maintain a proper counselor to camper ratio.
- Perform all other duties as duly assigned by the Recreation Manager, Recreation Coordinator, and Assistant Camp Director.
- Must be at least 21 years of age and have graduated from high school or obtained a GED equivalent.
- Must possess a minimum of one (1) year professional experience in childcare and/or youth recreation programs.
- Must possess or be able to obtain a certification in Adult and Child CPR & Standard First Aid.
- Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Texas Driver’s License.
- Preferred previous experience in Kyle Summer Camp or Spring Break Camp programs.
PREFFERED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of the equipment, facilities, operations, and techniques used at the Day Camps.
- Knowledge of child development, what to expect of children in different situations, and group management techniques.
- Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
- Ability to plan and supervise the work of paid staff and volunteers.
- Ability to remain calm and act resourcefully in an emergency and in stressful situations.
- Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
- Skill in monitoring/assessing performance of yourself, other individuals, or organizations to make improvements or take corrective action.
- Judgement and decision-making skills.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
While performing duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; walk; use hands to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear; and taste or smell. The employee may be routinely required to climb, balance, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or crawl. Work may routinely require the employee to push, pull, lift, and/or carry up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. This job requires the individual to frequently work outdoors and indoors in a variety of environmental conditions, including high temperatures, humidity, moisture, and distracting noises. An individual who poses a direct threat to the health and safety of himself/herself or others in the workplace will be deemed not qualified for this position. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
