The Lead Lift Station Technician directs and assists the Lift Station Technicians. Operates, inspects, repairs, and maintains the City's wastewater collection systems and related equipment; monitors and assists in ensuring facilities/stations operate efficiently and in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements; diagnoses and resolves system and equipment issues; assists in the construction of new facilities and/or improvement of existing facilities; prepares and maintains departmental maintenance records. Performs other related duties. Performs general skilled maintenance activities and functions.

The incumbent’s work schedule will be established by the supervisor and will include rotational on-call weekend schedules, and possible overtime due to the nature of the position. This position is also considered to be a member of the City Emergency Response Team.  

  • Operates, maintains, repairs, replaces, modifies, re-designs, and upgrades sewer collection lift stations and related equipment including wet wells, pumps, mechanical/electrical controls, and SCADA monitoring equipment; conducts inspections and monitors lift stations for safe and proper functioning; coordinates and performs all aspects of site maintenance.
  • Completes routine wastewater system maintenance assignments and activities, without direct supervision, including, but not limited to minor lift station pump and manhole maintenance and repairs, concrete work, and general maintenance of wastewater collection systems.
  • Interacts with vendors and obtains quotes for goods/services when necessary.
  • Help develop and maintain a preventative maintenance program.
  • Responsible for keeping maintenance records up to date, including work orders and related forms.
  • Provides direction and training to less-experienced staff as needed, acting as a lead role with the Division.
  • Maintains all equipment utilized in maintenance activities, including changing oil and other routine maintenance of appropriate equipment.
  • Performs maintenance and repair work on a regularly scheduled basis without direct supervision.
  • Assist other Waste Utilities and Public Works staff and departments in the planning and execution of their assignments, providing labor and/or technical assistance as required.
  • Assists and supports other city departments with general maintenance projects, needs, and activities.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • General operational knowledge, experience, and/or familiarity with all Public Works machinery and equipment.

  • Knowledge of Microsoft programs including: Office 365, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access and Publisher. 

  • Ability to troubleshoot lift station pumping issues and understanding of operation.

  • Ability to operate an overhead boom lift safely and responsibly. 

  • Ability to interpret engineered plans to assist with the design and construction of City of Kyle wastewater facilities.

  • Works with other maintenance employees and is open to taking direction and positive criticism.

  • Written Communication – able to read and interpret written information such as documents of safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to draft routine reports and correspondence, and speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.

  • Mathematical Skills – Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratios, and percentages and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

  • Organizational Support – Follow policies and procedures; develop and maintain standard operating procedures as needed. 

  • Judgment – Includes appropriate people in the decision-making process.

  • Planning/Organizing – Uses time efficiently; ability to multitask various job assignments efficiently.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Two (2) years’ experience in municipal wastewater or collections, or equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience which evidences a comprehensive knowledge of required job duties and expectations.
  • Valid Texas State Driver’s License at hire date, and eligibility for coverage under the City of Kyle vehicle insurance provider.
  • Must live within 45 minutes of normal travel time to the Water Utilities facility and have reliable transportation.  
  • TCEQ Class “D” Wastewater Treatment Operator license or Collections I license.
  • TCEQ Class “C” Wastewater Treatment Operator or Collections II license before Class “D” or Collections I license expires.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Four (4) years’ experience in municipal wastewater or collections; or equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience which evidences a comprehensive knowledge of required job duties and expectations.
  • TCEQ Wastewater Collection II Certification or Class ‘C’ Wastewater license.

Any corrective eyewear required while operating a motor vehicle must be worn at all times while working.
