The City of La Verne Police Department has an excellent opportunity for young adults interested in a law enforcement career. College-aged candidates (18-21 years old) are preferred for this role.

As a Police Cadet, you will receive valuable hands-on experience as well as an opportunity to make a positive impact on your community and your career. Under the supervision of sworn or civilian personnel, the Police Cadet performs a variety of police clerical, technical, and administrative support duties in the areas including, but not limited to : lobby reception, records, parking enforcement, crime prevention, community services, patrol, traffic, property and evidence, investigations, and operations. The Police Cadet is a part-time / temporary position, scheduled to work no more than 28 hours per week.

This is not a sworn Police Officer or a Police Officer training position, and the Police Cadet is not eligible to participate in the City's retirement plan or health insurance. There is no guarantee of a full-time position with the La Verne Police Department. Please read this entire job bulletin prior to applying for this position.

Under immediate to general supervision, the Police Cadet performs duties throughout the La Verne Police Department (LVPD). The Police Cadet is expected to perform a full range of general clerical, technical, and administrative functions as designated by the Chief of Police including records, parking enforcement, community services, property and evidence, investigations, and operations.

Examples of Duties

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following :

  • Perform clerical assignments including typing, answer telephone requests for police services, query law enforcement computer systems for information.
  • Operate business office machines, process reports and maintains records and files, collect information from the public for the purpose of generating reports.
  • Process reports, maintains records and files.
  • Perform cite verifications and fingerprinting services for the public.
  • Perform support functions for the Departments Community Services division.
  • Perform subpoena services and issues parking citations.
  • Investigate recreational vehicle and overnight parking applications.
  • Maintain upkeep, arrange for repair and the storage of police equipment and / or vehicles.
  • Direct traffic at events, accidents, and major incidents.
  • Assist the public with reporting of lost / stolen property in misdemeanor cases.
  • Provide information and assistance to the public at the front counter.
  • Assist with transport of property, signaling devices, and other items.
  • Collect monies for public requests of documents and perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

High School Diploma or GED equivalent and must be between the ages of 18 through 21 at time of appointment.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION :

Must possess a valid California Driver's License.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT :

Ability to sit, stand, walk; exposure to cold, heat, noise, outdoors, vibration, and mechanical hazards; ability to travel to different sites and locations; availability for shift work, on-call, and stand-by.

Under Federal law, employees must contribute 1.45% of their gross monthly earnings for Medicare coverage. The City will match the employee's contribution.
