What are the responsibilities and job description for the Traffic Control Technician position at City of Lakeland, Civil Service?
- Flags at electric and water utility work sites in all types of weather.
- Controls the direction of traffic control patterns and places signs and barricades in compliance with MUTCD.
- Maintains tools, signs, and related equipment in serviceable condition.
- Operations traffic control trucks, generators, and trailer-mounted arrow boards.
- Performs vehicle inspection daily.
- May be required to work overtime or alternate hours as necessary for the efficient operation of the department.
- Position is Mission Critical.
- When not performing traffic control responsibilities, the technician may perform other job duties, including, but not limited to, cleaning and reading water meters, general labor duties, painting fire hydrants, and backflow preventers.
- Performs related work as required.
- High school diploma from an accredited school or a GED.
- Must be 18 years of age by date of hire.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license.
- Must maintain a valid telephone number.
- Must obtain traffic control certification within 6 months of employment.
- Knowledge of hand tools, portable generators, and related equipment.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards associated with this type of work.
- Ability to communicate on City radio.
- Ability to maintain harmonious relationships with other employees and the public.
- Ability to read and use maps and City directions.
- Ability to operate various equipment associated with the work.
- Ability to work with minimal direct supervision.
- Requires work that involves climbing up/downstairs, bending, walking/standing for prolonged periods, bending, twisting, and exerting up to 100 pounds of force regularly.
- The job risks exposure to working hours both day/night, wet, humid, hot/cold, bright/dim light, traffic, heights, dust, and pollen.
- The job requires normal visual acuity, field vision, hearing, speaking, color perception, sense of smell, depth perception, and texture perception.
