The Recreation and Community Services Department is seeking energetic, enthusiastic and responsible candidates to fill part-time seasonal positions. Incumbents will work a varied schedule throughout the period of May 12 - September 28, 2025 (2025 Aquatic Season). Under the direction of the pool manager, the Senior Lifeguard assists in the daily operation of a pool facility and aquatics program. Senior Lifeguards must be at least 18 years of age. This is an at-will position and the incumbent will serve at the pleasure of City Manager or designee.

Examples of Duties
Duties may include, but are not limited to the following : Assist the pool manager in the daily operation of the pool facility and aquatics program; assume the responsibility of "acting pool manager" in the pool manager's absence; assist in staff training and evaluation; implement Mentor Program; complete and verify money control sheets, attendance logs and swim lesson registration receipts; enforce pool policies and regulations with pool patrons and the general public; perform the duties of a lifeguard or swimming instructor as needed.
Qualifications
Experience : Two years of experience as a Lifeguard and Swim Instructor.
Required Certifications : American Red Cross Lifeguard Training for the Professional Rescuer (Lifeguard / CPR / AED), First Aid for Public Safety Personnel (Title 22), Water Safety Instructor, Bloodborne Pathogens, Oxygen Administration. A Lifeguard Instructor Certification (LGI) must be obtained within 3 months of hire.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities : Knowledge of advanced swimming skills / current rescue techniques; lifeguarding principles; first aid / CPR for professional rescuers; English usage, basic math, appropriate safety precautions and procedures; ability to read and write standard English at a level required for successful job performance; understand and carry out written and oral instructions; interpret, apply and explain pool rules and regulations; communicate effectively orally and in writing; set a positive example for other lifeguards and aquatics personnel to follow, encouraging a positive attitude and high morale among employees; and establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Physical and Mental Demands / Environmental Exposure : Ability to work in outdoor environment with exposure to heat and sun; ability to swim and lift, push and pull to rescue children and adults; ability to hear cries for assistance, splashing and sounds from a distance of 50 yards; ability to see area of responsibility and read charts, thermometers, gauges and reports.

SELECTION PROCEDURE : All properly submitted applications will be reviewed and evaluated. Those candidates appearing to have the best qualifications for the position will be invited to participate further in the examination process. The selection process may require a combination of oral interviews and performance evaluations. A written exam and an in-water skill evaluation will be conducted on Saturday, April 12, 2025 at 10 : 00 am at Mayfair Pool . Some candidates will be invited to an additional oral interview. Not all applicants may be tested or interviewed. Selected candidates must submit a certificate documenting that within the last two years he / she has been examined and found to be free of communicable tuberculosis to the Recreation Department by the date of hire. The certificate must be signed by a licensed examining physician or public health agency.

COMPENSATION : City employees are paid on a bi-weekly basis, therefore, published monthly salary is for illustration purposes only, rounded to whole dollars. Actual salary is based on hourly rate rounded to four decimal places.

RESTRICTIONS ON NEPOTISM : The employment of relatives can create undesirable results, particularly in connection with performance evaluation, discipline, and general morale of other workers. Therefore, it is the city's policy that no relative of any City officer or employee to which this resolution applies shall be employed, if said City officer or employee is in a supervisory, lead or subordinate position over said relative in the areas of hiring, setting compensation, discipline or termination. PHYSICAL EXAMINATION : Employment offers are conditional, based upon the successful completion of a medical examination which includes drug and alcohol screening for safety-sensitive positions. Physicals are performed by the City's designated physician at the City's expense. Candidates are cautioned not to quit their jobs or give notice to their current employer until they are determined to be medically qualified.
TUBERCULOSIS TESTING : Candidates selected to work in a position requiring contact with children must submit a certificate or notice documenting that within the last two years they have been examined and found to be free of communicable tuberculosis. POSSESSION OF A VALID CALIFORNIA DRIVER'S LICENSE : Employees in classifications requiring possession of a valid California driver's license will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice program, which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects the driving record.
LOYALTY OATH OR AFFIRMATION : All City employees are required to sign a loyalty oath or affirmation prior to actual employment.
EMERGENCY SERVICE : All City employees are required to perform assigned Emergency Service duties in the event of an emergency or disaster.
PROBATIONARY PERIOD : Employees appointed to positions in the classified service are required to serve a probationary period of not less than six months. All other employees are considered at-will and serve at the pleasure of the appointing authority.
Part time employees are eligible to participate in the City's alternate retirement plan. The City does not participate in Social Security. Part time employees are not eligible to participate in any other benefit programs except as may be required by law.
