The City of Lakewood’s Horticulture Department is currently seeking an energetic self- motivated person with knowledge and passion for shrub and flower beds. The City of Lakewood is currently recruiting variable employees for this position. A variable employee is an at-will employee who works in a seasonal or temporary capacity. Their work schedule is based on business need. This position would be a part-time non benefitted position.
Shifts are from Monday-Thursday 6:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. and Friday 6:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. (40) hours/week
MAJOR TASKS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Main duties include weeding, pruning, watering, mulching, raking, deadheading Production and preparation of annual and perennial plant material
Planting and maintenance of flower displays in urban parks and on city properties
Must maintain and utilize City-provided Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when conducting activities
Other Park maintenance related tasks and activities
Please note this is an entry level position and that training can and will be provided.
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Experience
No previous experience is required.
Licensure/Certification/Registration
Valid driver’s license and good driving record.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES; PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Must have the ability to work well as a team member. Post-offer physical exam may be required.
Background check required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Lifting:
Must lift items from levels that include floor level or from below the knee; knee through chest level and above the shoulder level that may weigh more than 50 pounds. Items to be lifted may include, but are not limited to bags of fertilizer, bags of seed, tables, tree limbs.
Language Ability:
Have the ability to read, interpret, and apply organizational policy and procedures and other written guidelines to work functions, and to work independently
Communication:
Must be able to communicate effectively among team members and other employees. Must be able to communicate effectively with public contacts in the field.
EQUIPMENT USED:
Vehicles, hand tools, landscape maintenance equipment – blowers, trimmers, edgers, tractors, loaders, bobcat, etc. Please note that training can and will be provided.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Majority of work is performed outdoors under various weather conditions. Other work environments include shop facilities and the greenhouse.
Pay Range
Background and reference checks will be conducted for all regular and some variable/seasonal positions.
Salary : $15 - $19
