What are the responsibilities and job description for the Heavy Equipment Mechanic position at City of Lancaster?
Performs skilled work at the Journeyperson level in maintenance, and repair of gasoline and diesel-powered construction equipment, heavy and light trucks, and automobiles; and perform other duties as required.
Environmental ConditionsÂ
- Follows safe practices in the performance of duties.
- Operates light automotive, heavy truck and construction equipment.
- Diagnose mechanical defects in pickup trucks, automobiles, dump trucks, tractors, motor graders, cranes, mowers, street sweepers, forklifts, rollers, compactors, pavers, backhoes, loaders, milling equipment, excavators and other diesel and gas-powered construction equipment in accordance with standard training practices.
- Work under general supervision, using independent judgment as to methods of repair after receiving oral instructions as to the nature of work to be performed; a supervisor may check work during repair or test running condition of equipment after work is completed.
- Performs repair and overhaul brakes, ignition systems, transmissions, differentials, front and rear brakes, suspension components, rebuild hydraulic cylinders and hydraulic systems.
- Performs general overhaul of gasoline and diesel engines.
- Determines extent of needed repair; inspect used parts to determine the cause of mechanical failure and evaluate whether parts are still usable or need to be replaced.
- Performs welding and cutting of metal.
- Performs State of Pennsylvania inspections of trucks and automobiles.
- Performs mechanical work in compliance with State and Federal laws governing mechanical equipment operated over  the road.
- Must be able to adapt and work safely onsite during all weather conditions.
- Performs ignition and carburetor tune up of gasoline engines.
- Performs lubrication and oil changing.
- Troubleshoots fuel, ignition, and emissions control systems, using electronic testing equipment. Â Â
- Responsible for maintaining computerized inventory.
- Graduation from High School or completion of a GED is required.
- A minimum of four (4) years of experience in the maintenance and servicing of automotive, road construction or other heavy equipment, including some engine repair work or formal training in engine repair required.Â
- Possession of a current valid driver's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is required.
- Possession of a Class A license with Tank Endorsement as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is required within six months from hire.  Some positions may require Hazardous Materials endorsement.
- Possession of inspections certificate; to perform inspections on CDL regulated vehicles is required.
- Possession of certification for emissions testing is required.
- Possession of a current certification by the Bureau of Traffic Safety of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as an official inspection mechanic is required.
- AWS Certified Welder certification preferred.Â
- Knowledge of safe practices related to Public Works.
- Knowledge of State vehicle inspection requirements and operating laws.
- Considerable knowledge of the standard practices, equipment and tools of the automotive mechanic trade is required.
- Knowledge of the operating principals of gasoline and diesel engines and of mechanical repair of heavy trucks and construction equipment is required. Â Â
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and of the safety precautions of the automotive mechanic trade.
- Skill in the use and operation of tools and machinery used in mechanical repair work.
- Skill in locating and adjusting defects in motor equipment.
- Ability to utilize and comprehend diagnostic equipment and print.
- Ability to use mechanical hand and power-driven tools and equipment such as grinders, lathers, testing and other garage shop tools and equipment. Mechanic must supply all necessary hand tools to perform all work required.
- Proven ability to fabricate and weld on equipment, hydraulic cylinders, and wherever necessary without compromising structural strength. Also, must have the ability to fabricate and modify specialty parts that are unavailable.Â
